All I know is the last thing we should be discussing here is Monahan's runway.

He's the best Flame I've seen for my money, even better than Fleury or Iggy (2 of my favorite players ever). I thought he'd stay around 60-70 points after his rookie year , but he proved me wrong. Hard not to be a fan.

IF Gaudreau was married I would seriously suggest it was his wife on here, but as suggested earlier probably his agent...lol.

Like, holy mama. I'm as big of a fan as Gaudreau as anyone (#PrayForJohnny) but you'd think we literally have 22-year old Patrick Kane here in Calgary. Johnny's great -- he turned Hudler into a star -- but it's not like he's on an Iggy-esque Donut line. We have a very good centre playing with him.

We're all huge fans of Gaudreau, but that is quite a difference from ranking him as already among the best players of all time.
For what it is worth, I thought Gaudreau would score +80 pts this season, and I believe he will hit 90 at some point in his career. But I also still don't think he is the best player in team history—not even close.

Fair enough but personally I would say Kane is clearly better than Ovie. Not at scoring goals but he is better at putting up points, and has 3 rings when Ovie hasn't made it past the 2nd round. Obviously a team game but Kane vs Ovie could easily be argued in favor of Kane I think

Kane is unquestionably one of the top 3 players in the game right now. Up there with Crosby and... McDavid?
Ovechkin is one of the greatest goal-scorers of all time and still a fantastic player, but you can't be the best player in the NHL while putting up 71 points. There's no way that Kane is inferior to Ovie right now, with the exception of goal-scoring -- and even then, that's close.

Then I'm not sure you watched Iggy. The same Iggy that has an Art Ross, 50 goal season, three 90+ point seasons, two 80+ point seasons, 11 straight seasons with 30+ goal seasons....
Yeah, Johnny has huge potential. But better than Iggy? Not just yet.

Hell, Bennett alone might make Monahan expendable at some point. Gaudreau's skills might only be comparable to Patrick Kane and Tyler Johnson, and if I'm being honest Johnson as a comparable is a stretch. Yes, Monahan does more things to help you win a game, but Gaudreau is pretty much irreplaceable.
|
I agree with your post for the most part. But I will say that once upon a time the Flames did have an elite winner with that elite skill set that was incredibly hard to find and almost impossible to replace, in one Jarome Iginla. He could score, set up the plays, beat your ass in a fight and will the team to victory. But history shows us that building around a winger just doesn't work.
For that reason I'd tend to to lean towards Monahan if we had to choose only one. I know it's easy to say he's replaceable with Bennett in the pipeline. But the team's mediocre results over the last 20+ years (outside of '04) speaks volumes when you don't have a top line C. Gaudreau undeniably has the skill and flash. I don't doubt he's the 'better' player. But Monahan is easily the more important one.
Thankfully, we have 2 potential top line C's in the pipeline. A solid 1A/1B combo AND and a soon-to-be elite winger. So we'll hopefully never have to make that decision in our lifetimes .
