Flames Ladislav Smid health update?

I know it's been debated before but was just curious on the status of Smid going into this year. He's a competitor but I think it's time to look at the future with his health and family. It's time to retire and save his body.

This would mean he would most likely be put on LTIR giving the Flames 3.5 m in space.

Thoughts?

argh...

putting a question mark at the end of the thread title would be of great use!

Thanks for the clickbait title. Came hoping for a Smid update, left with my hopes unfulfilled.

0/10, would not read again.

I think that is probably the direction it is headed. I forget where I heard it (think it was the Haynes podcast), but last year at this time he was at least skating at Winsport. I guess he hasn't been on the ice which would suggest that he is a ways off.

Sorry it's not up to your standards...I don't create 3 threads a day.

Well I don't think we actually know if it's time for him to retire. Heck he could be back to 100%, I think we need to find out from him if it's that time or not.

Neither do I. You must be thinking of somebody else.

I wonder if Smid is exhausting every last medical option before declaring himself as LTIR. Doing so would spell the end of his career - that would make it 3 years in a row where he's gotten shelved onto LTIR over a neck injury.

He's still 30, so he probably feels like he can squeeze out another couple of NHL seasons... providing his neck isn't an issue. Which 99% I feel is going to be an issue, especially considering he's one of the more physical d-men. But I don't expect an update on Smid before the start of at least camp, and I suspect Nakladal is waiting for that as well to resolve before he signs.

Why would he retire when he still has a year left on his contract. Best just go on LTIR

The player doesn't decide to go on LTIR, it would be the GM if the doctors don't clear him, right?

Best for who?

The best thing for Smid is to be cleared to play.

FWIW: The last official word from Treliving back in July was that they didn't have any updates yet in terms of Smid's status.

With a History of neck injuries, I wince every time Smid gets hit. It wouldn't be much fun watching a Flame get crippled.
