I have it recorded but won't be able to watch until tomorrow. I've always been surprised that's not one of their biggest songs, I love it
Agreed. It's one of my personal favourites and I was hoping they would play it. They used to play it at concerts but maybe the library is just too big now to fit everything in.
I was trying to think of why I connect to them so much.
I remember as 9-10 year old watching much music and seeing them on there. I really enjoyed 100th meridian. I remember thinking how goofy the lead singer was. Whenever a new album came out people complained about them being overplayed/raved about them . But their songs stuck around and stayed on the airwaves. At the pub or a party it was likely multiple hip songs played. In university i was really into them. I remember listening to them while I studied and at parties etc.
I essentially grew up with them and they were a constant part of the life. Like a cousin that comes and goes, you have great times with, but may not see for years. Part of what my feeling is right now is guilt in not listening more and taking them for granted.

I don't know how old some of you are but when muchmusic first came on air New Orleans is Sinking was one of the few Canadian videos on the rotation and it got pretty well embedded in my skull due to it being played many times a day, every day, for a long time. The fact I'm still not sick of the song is testament to its greatness.
Gord's been speaking about first nations issues for a long time, not just in his music but even in interviews in recent years. I think he was actually trying to put more pressure on Trudeau to do something about it than actively endorsing him.
My already sky high respect for Gord went even higher considering what was supposed to be all about him and his band he used to catapult an important social issue in this country into the limelight. Pretty much case in point why this is the most important band in Canadian history.
Yep. First Nations issues and clean alternate energy have both been his cause for a while now.
I'm glad he was able to work his life's work all into one tonight.

I made it until now without crying because of my wife's casual indifference to The Hip and her ability to stone face me in trying situations. I went to the first show in Calgary and didn't cry. Now I'm feeling feelings and realizing how The Tragically Hip were my life soundtrack for my late teens and the majority of my twenties. When I ended up basically possession free at the turn of the century I still had all of my Hip CDs in a box in my car.

I think the hip have affected most Canadians in a different way and I hope they brought everyone together tonight. I know it has within my family and friends. What other Canadian group has had the same influence on our country?

They're probably second after the the Olympic hockey teams. Which says a lot. Even people who aren't fans have a ton of memories where the Hip was present.
Does anyone have the Grace, too video from tonight?

Took this band way too much for granted. World class for sure. Tonight was an experience. So glad CBC ran it without ads. What other nation does that?
Some of the emotional parts were tugging. The songs took on new meaning with Gord's circumstances and I never realized what a poet he was.
Just amazed.
Yup, that part was fantastic. Some people question why we have the CBC. Well every so often an event like this makes it worth while. No private broadcaster would have done it as cleanly without advertising as this was. There wasn't even a "brought to you by" that they could pump all week beforehand. It's really nice to not have consumerism shoved down your throat for a change. Kept the whole experience really pure.
