Default Physicists *Might* Have Discovered a New, Fifth Fundamental Force

If confirmed, look out. It will be a massive shake up to our understanding of the Universe.

Quote:
In a paper that was recently published in the journal Physical Review Letters, a research team from the University of California, Irvine explain how recent particle physics experiments may have yielded evidence of a new type of boson. This boson apparently does not behave as other bosons do, and may be an indication that there is yet another force of nature out there governing fundamental interactions.

....

If such a particle does exist, the possibilities for research breakthroughs could be endless. Feng hopes it could be joined with the three other forces governing particle interactions (electromagnetic, strong and weak nuclear forces) as a larger, more fundamental force. Feng also speculated that this possible discovery could point to the existence of a “dark sector” of our universe, which is governed by its own matter and forces.

Hoping someone with a physics background can talk about the implications if this is confirmed some more!

When I think of dark sectors of the universe I think of Cern and what it is that is actually happening over in Geneva.

Some of the news is kind of freaky....yet interesting....and fascinating.

I've figured out what it is: the Force of No Goodness. It was discovered in Rogers Place.

Just once, I want something concrete to be discovered.
Dark matter, dark photons, dark universes, and now... dark sectors. Jesus. As a layman, the luster of these 'dark' discoveries is lost on me.

^What do you mean by "concrete"?

I find the "dark" parts of the universe fascinating, as they make up something like 95% of the matter and energy that exists.

Think about that... 95% of reality is (almost) totally invisible to us, but interacts with us through gravity.

The fifth fundamental force is The Tragically Hip.

This makes sense with supersymetry slowly being not verified experimentally

I think me means some easy to explain science thing that leads to some obvious technological break through. Like someone coming out and saying "yep, we figured out warp drive, we'll have an FTL starship in ten years".

What and what? I am not up on my physics news, obviously. I know nothing of which you speak.

What's happening in Geneva?! What's supersymmetry?! I'm off to google. But would love to hear more from other people here who have some knowledge. Sounds interesting.

Earlier in the year there was also a buzz about a new fundamental particle (YouTube video on it here). Turned out to be a false alarm. This article from Forbes is a good summary of why we should take this new potential discovery with a grain of salt until more info comes out:

How Did We Fool Ourselves Into Believing In A New Particle That Wasn't There?

Basically supersymetry suggests for each particle there is a corresponding boson. However outside of the Higgs boson they haven't found the corresponding bosons for other particles that should exist at the energy levels they are looking for them.

What physicists like about supersymetry is that it makes the universes state not happy random chance where the energy value of the Higgs boson has to be so precise or else we wouldn't exist. With supersymetry failing we need a new theory or you need to accept the weak anthropic answer that the reason the energy levels of the fund entail particles are what they are is that if they weren't we wouldn't be around to observe them.

I wish I was smart enough to understand some of the info brought up here. I honestly try to wrap my head around the theories and data and it just doesn't click.

Makes me feel dumb...

A good documentary to watch is "Particle Fever" on Netflix. It explains supersymmetry (SUSY) theory and Multiverse theory. It revolves around finding the so called "God Particle". Quite fascinating.

It doesnt really go into Dark Energy or Dark Matter, but atleast you wont be 100% lost when reading the article in the OP. Only like 98% lost

naming it "dark matter" and "dark energy" was a massive mistake. It implies that we know that its some type of matter or some type of energy. In reality its just the name of an anomaly in our observations we can't figure out.

But yeah I watch a lot of space and physics documentaries and shows (Ive literally watched everything I could find post 2010). Theres a lot of really good ones that explain things well in laymans terms.

I'm a layman, and also struggle to follow this this type of news.

But, if it makes you feel less discouraged, one of the biggest obstacles for laymen is trying to apply common sense or using 'models' of how we observe the world. Human brains evolved to see normal-sized stuff in the desert and we're ill-equipped to do much else.

I'll just pretend this new force is The Force and that Obi Wan, Anakin and Yoda could come visit me as a Force ghost one day.

So if I understand this correctly:

There is possibly a force that can control outcomes like luck and chance? So theoretically I can control the outcome at a craps table?

Someone needs to put this into perspective so guys like me can understand it.
