it's a great deal! I'm pleased that the AAV is that low.

This is a good deal for both sides IMO. And quite a day for the organization. If Johnny signs a deal of similar length, it is quite a statement.

I wonder what Monahan's price tag was for the 8th year? If he were to be paid $8 million for that 8th year, the AAV would have gone up to about $6.6 million.

LT deals also carry some risk for the organization but Flames are pretty much all in with a 7 year deal anyway.

5 would be worse than 4.

But no worries because it won't happen

You'd ask for 10 million the 8th year at a minimum so at least 6.8. If you believe your Towes then you ask for 12 the 8th year. But why would you sign the 8th year of you Monahan. You sign the 7 year because your options are like 3 yr 5mil for 15 million or a 45 million dollar contract.

You sign that deal just on a risk basis. But adding another 8 which delays the next 50 by a year doesn't make sense.

I think Monahan's new contract likely opens the door for a sub 7 Million Dollar per season deal for Gaudreau. We may not like the term, but I can see the $$$

...It isn't what they suggest, though.

1) Those charts, or any stat in general that uses a 3 year sample, is going to be slightly skewed when it includes information from the 19 year old rookie season of a kid who really did have struggles that year.

2) Those charts clearly point to Monahan's point production as being that of an NHL 1st liner. They show zero debate on that.

3) As of now with a 44% / 33% / 22% weighting of each of the last three seasons, they suggest Monahan's possession as being that of an NHL 3rd/2nd line tweener. The best way to describe that would be a player who neither drives possession (the way a guy like Bergeron does) nor actively sinks it (like Antoine Vermette did before the Coyotes bought him out). Is that not a fair way to describe Sean Monahan?

Don't be so sensitive about information. Those charts are just a loose way of presenting it, and the information is worth considering:

-It tells you that Monahan is good enough to play top nine
-But you probably don't yet want him to be the single best play driver on his line
-He's not proven enough to expect him to drag a first line behind him on his back
-He has already proven he can already produce points like a top liner on a top line.

That sounds like Sean Monahan to me.

By that logic, wouldn't he sign a 6 year deal? Or 5? Why is 7 the magic number?

I agree that the negotiation gets harder every further year out. But I can't believe $10 million was the asking price for year 8. IDK - maybe you're right.

Boring Sean Monahan @boringmonahan
I asked Johnny Gaudreau if he wanted to to go out and celebrate the signing of our new contracts and he said very funny, Sean.

My humour comes from the fact people need a Hero chart to tell them these things.

I did a thing on Matt Stajan for FN last year and his teammates, especially the youngish forwards, rave about him.

some lockout protection in 2020 with the $3.5 million signing bonus.

That signing bonus will get paid out even if there is a lockout.
