Most people had Monahan pegged at 6.5+ so I can't see anyone being upset with this. 7 vs 8 years is really not a big deal.

That's a solid deal.
I always struggle between wanting that 8th year or not...
On the one hand, locking a key player up for as long as possible has obvious benefits.
On the other hand, keeping the AAV down by only going 7 really benefits the team for now.
In the end, the cap is likely to be substantially higher in 8 years, so deal with the UFA signing then. And having a lower AAV for 7 years is huge.
Plus, a LOT can happen over 7 years. Having Monahan signed at $6.3M vs, say $6.75M, will be nice.
Gaudreau's term will be interesting
