If its 8 years term buys 4 years
If its 7 years term buys 3 years.
This is because Monahan will become a UFA after 7 years in the NHL and not at 27, thanks to breaking into the league at 18.

3 or 4 depending on whether the term is 7 or 8. UFA status is achieved after 7 Professional seasons (or age 27 whichever comes first) so if he signs a 7 year extension the UFA years would equal the length of his ELC. If that $$ figure is accurate it better be for 8 years. I'm fine having him be the highest paid of his comparables... but I want the extra year if that's the case.

And should be noted that the way 7 years $47 million was worded like a complete guess on Francis' part, not necessarily from a source.

And it's worth mentioning Barkov and Forsberg "only" have six year deals. Not wanting to give up two UFA years obviously gets a lower cap hit.
Getting those 7th and 8th years in, prime UFA ones, will raise the cap hit. The best comparable is probably MacKinnon and I'd be comfortable with Monahan making more.

Yeah, I agree with MMF. Don't want to turn this into a Monahan v. MacKinnon thread (and it likely won't have the time if Mony signs tomorrow) but Monahan has defined himself as the superior player without question, for now. MacK definitely still has time to catch up, especially as the Avs get better. Now please, I really don't want to derail this thread.
Anyhow, I'm super excited for tomorrow. I've woken up every day this summer and immediately checked CP for news of the signing. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the [Signing] tag for Wotherspoon's deal.

After looking at the comparables, Monahan has definitely shown more than any of Barkov/Scheifele/Mac/Forsberg, and if he gets an 8 year deal, he definitely deserves to have the highest cap hit of the group.
I had thought NateMac had been doing significantly better than he has. I wonder if the changes in Colorado will bring him back to the level of his rookie season. Monahan is looking like a better bet than Mac at this point in their careers.

^ Barkov has been fantastic, bigrangy. I'd hesitate before calling Monahan better. Barkov's a year younger, yet last year he scored at nearly a 0.9 PPG pace, something not a lot of players did, let alone any other 20-year-olds. Mony's a fantastic player, but Barkov is a Selke candidate who can really put up points.

This is very encouraging. If it's a 7 or 8 year deal, and under $7 million/ year, I am not that concerned by overpaying an extra $200 or $300k a year against the salary cap. $300k is maybe 0.4% of the cap today. A drop in the bucket compared to overpaying for mediocre talents.

The key with Barkov is he only signed a 6 year deal - thus the lower AAV

You guys are reading this wrong. Yes his cap will be 6.7ish but that's only cuz him and Johnny have to match. Johnny at 6.7 as well. Hahah I wish.

No doubt. I'd much rather have Barkov going forward, even without considering his awesome contract. He's a monster. But he's only had one good season, Monahan's had two, thus the "shown more" comment.
My earlier guess for Monahan's contract was 6.25x7, but after hearing this news, I'm expecting a 6.6x8. Maybe 6.75, then hopefully everyone gets the Gio cap.

This news together with Johnny's negotiations spreading to the media tells me that Monahan gets the higher AAV contract. The big talented centre gets paid the most - hopefully that is the case here. I was lambasted in April for suggesting this, but it seems more and more likely to me that the Flames are indeed playing hard ball with Johnny and have asked him to accept less than Monahan. Announcing the signing of Monahan while Johnny goes out to buy insurance for the world cup is just rubbing salt into it ....
