I don't think it's that he will get 10, it's that, as one of the best hockey players in the world, an argument can be made for that.
Now, as you noted, he did it for one year (following a tremendous rookie season).
This is the exact argument going on between the sides. I don't think it's ludicrous to think that the first number out of Gaudreau's agent's mouth was "10". Just like BTs first number was probably "6". Both are equally out to lunch, but not without arguments for. Which is why you would start there.
