hypothetically speaking, if negotiations remained stalled, who in the league would you accept a trade with Johnny Gaudreau for?

Not many. I genuinely believe he will be in the top 2 or 3 players for most of his career and you're not getting one of those players in return.

May as well discuss the Flames hypothetically moving to Seattle seeing neither has even a shred of a chance of happening.

So it's not likely that a star player in the NHL would ask for a trade due to contract negotiations?
I expected more of an intelligent response from you if I had to be honest.

The longer this goes, the easier it is for a team to come in and sign Monahan to an offer sheet that forces Calgary's hand for the worse. I could see it happening because you have several teams with the salary cap room, you also have several teams still holding their 3 first picks. Buffalo, Carolina and New Jersey are all teams that can swoop in with an offer sheet and are able to match the conditions.
Also doesn't help that Calgary did the NHL taboo of signing O'Reilly to an offer sheet, which makes them prime targets without the normal backlash.
Even if Calgary matches, they lose all bargaining power with Monahan, and also forces Calgary to potentially make a move just to sign Gaudreau, who will likely looking to be paid more than Monahan.
That's the true nightmare scenario that can happen the longer this goes. Drawing your line on the sand is no good if someone else can just come in and destroy it.

Silver lining: the opposing GM would have to square off with Burkie in a barn. Which would be wildly entertaining.

Yea, that's the real relevant part of the discussion here.
You should start a thread. What will we get for them when they eventually leave? Seems really pertinent and topical to this off season in the infancy of their careers in 2016.

I don't think so. In actual fact the length of time taken for this negotiation to come to a close does not affect the likelihood of an offer sheet—for all we know Monahan has already declined more than one. If anything I would think that delay would give other teams pause since it likely means two things: 1) that the ask from Monahan's camp is very high, and 2) that the Flames are determined to make a long-term deal.

Yes, and apparently.
Told an overreacting fanbase to not worry about their poor to start to the season. Went on to make the playoffs.
Also dating Olivia Munn, which can't hurt one's positive attitude.

This. Plus any offersheet that Monahan would accept would push the compensation past the three picks.
