No goalie equipment changes this year? UPD: new pants mandatory as of Feb 4
so apparently some NHL goalies don't think the approved equipment changes will happen this year?

Every story on the changes is from March/April and they said the goalies were supposed to have the new equipment ready by June so they'd have the summer to get used to it.
Like this one: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl-aims-to-reduce...eason-1.453941
Since we're in August and they haven't heard anything, I'd say it's likely that we won't see any changes this season.

I sure hope the changes are for this season.... If the goalies had their way they would look like lacrosse goalies... It's gotten out of hand...

Maybe it's all part of the plan. The NHL is going to make them wear the new equipment without letting them practice in it first, so that scoring Really goes up. Haha

Sources tell Sportsnet that despite unprecedented cooperation by the NHLPA, a small cadre of NHL goalies have managed to stall the process long enough that not a single NHL goalie has received gear fitting the hoped-for standards for the coming season.
The World Cup appears out of question, and it is believed enough goalies will make a case that they will be unable to adjust to the new equipment without a summer to assimilate, that the new standard could well be pushed back to September of 2017.
Some believe a mid-season equipment change is possible, while others spoken to by Sportsnet doubt that an across the board equipment change could be instituted in-season.
|
So guesses as to which goalies are holding up the process?

Ugghhh...
Probably the "safety" issue. I have no idea how a goalie can state that they need equipment hanging way off the body for safety reasons.

The new gear needs to be WAY smaller in order to make a difference.
And doing a mid-season change would be just plain dumb. So the NHL will probably do it.
Dumb NHL.

Being based on the Wet Coast, Ryan Miller has been pretty outspoken about reducing the size of goalie equipment, ergo I would put him at the top of the list.

It is Allan Walsh, but it sounds like the NHLPA might reject the new pants.
Allan Walsh @walsha
Talked to several NHL goalies with serious concerns about new tight fitting goalie pants. Restricts movement, no padding for inner thighs.
Allan Walsh
@walsha
New goalie pants will have zero impact on scoring, but will lead to whole rash of new goalie injuries. Back to drawing board.
Allan Walsh @walsha
NHL teams should be VERY concerned about this. NHL is sacrificing goalie safety in name of increased goalscoring. Gathering photos to post.

Sign Bishop if that's the case.

They say this every time about everything, its hard to take them seriously at this point.
Cut the blocker and trapper by a third. Nothing to do with safety there.

Yeah, I'm not sure why they decided to go after the pants. They are the least of any gear problems. Hands and pads are where they can cut.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
NHL has issued memo to all clubs/goalies saying all netminders must be wearing the "new" re-designed/size appropriate pants by Feb 4.

It'll be interesting checking the goals per game average in the league for the period after February 4 compared to the period pre February 4.

I'm not sure why they are doing this mid-season, why not just give the goalies the summer to adjust?
It's almost like mandating players need a shortened stick - it's just not what they're used to playing with their whole careers and now they need to adjust?
