It was a DUD!!! NK Test a Failure??
I started this thread due to the deterioration of the other thread.
Well there is suspicion that the Nuke was a DUD or Faked.
Here is Reuter's take.... Hmmmm???
So if this is true then in 6 months they have shown that they can't launch missiles during a rainstorm nor fire off enriched plutonium.
Maybe they should stick to drug running.

still a dumb move cause they've not upset china, and if it is a fake.. well, it puts them in a worse position than they were when they were just "claiming" to have one.

I think China is a lot less concerned about this than some people are making them out to be. They have a lot more influence over Kim than people give them credit for. I wouldn't surprised if they covertly approved the test.

maybe not suprised, but you would be wrong. This was a big slap in the face to China internationally. It hurt their diplomatic clout. They know it and they are mad.

China doesn't like it, although they have been pretty close with N.Korea because of their communist ties. A nuclear N.Korea means a scared ****less Japan, which in turn means a nuclear Japan within the next 6 months. And what if Taiwan decides THEY also want nukes? If China wants to be the only "Big Boi" in NE Asia, they are going to have to step up to the plate and tell Lil Kim he can't have his nukes.

I think they say they don't like it, but I don't think they really mind. I also don't think it really hurt China 'internationally'. They're doing jus' fine. If anything they've been gaining diplomatic clout by appearing to be with the US/Russia/Europe on this thing rather than not cooperating. Notice that China is the one resisting the possible military intervention Japan is calling for.
I think this incident suits China. Less people looking at China = good. In the late 90's we were all 'but what about human rights!', now we're all 'but what about North Korea!'. Good turn of events for China. My opinion anyway.

I think a nuclear Japan in 6 months is a bit much. The US can cover Japan 'nuclear-wise' with their subs, no problem. Japan is not in imminent danger because it doesn't posess nuclear weapons, and they still have pretty big issues with full re-militarization, that hurdle hasn't been fully jumped yet.

I guess that is one way of looking at it, but all of the international experst I saw on TV said it was a huge embarrassment for the Chinese. This hurt them more than it will hurt NK diplomatically.

Yeah... I'd still be pretty shocked if China really didn't want the nuke to be tested. I don't really see how it hurts their diplomatic standing with anyone. Again, they're (seen to be) on the side of the US/Europe/Russia here... I think their diplomatic relations would be hurt a lot more if they condoned the test or stayed 'neutral'. At least this way they look like they're with the international body politic. I just don't think they are, and I think the US knows this, but who wants to cause a major incident? China's doing fine, and the US is in no shape. You want to talk damaged international diplomatic standing, start talking about the US.

I also think this will devastate North Korea diplomatically. No way does China lose more from this test than North Korea. Its been suggested NK may be following the Pakistan route; develop and test the bomb and ride out the sanctions. Pakistan went through several years of sanctions and condemnation, and now they're an important ally on the War against Terror!

Well, you mentioned China's international diplomatic standing would be hurt by this, I'm just saying that the damage will probably be much less than the US has sustained over the past 5 years.
