Default iPhone 5 screen lifting up?

So my iPhone 5 has a screen that has totally separated from its body. Light leaks out from all sides, and it has gotten so bad that I can kind of lift the screen up, and sometimes the Siri button gets stuck from the screen lifting too much. Someone has told me that this is due to a swollen battery.

Is is this dangerous to keep in my pocket? Can the Apple store in Chinook fix this? I'm not really in a position to buy a new phone, and everything else works just fine.

A swollen battery is certainly not a good thing, it means gas has built up inside the battery. I certainly wouldn't want it in my pocket.

Here is a good writeup on it.

The new goggles also do nothing.

If it is a swollen battery it can be dangerous if it's punctured or ruptures, the risk could be low but I probably wouldn't keep it in my pocket.

The Apple Store or one of the local phone repair places should be able to replace it.

You can find replacement batteries on ebay/Amazon for pretty cheap, most also come with the tools you need to replace the battery yourself. That is if you feel confident doing it yourself and not worried about the battery blowing up in your face.

Definitely sounds like a swollen battery. Replacements used to be $79 in the stores. Keep in mind going elsewhere limits any further fixes to the phone by Apple.

Have you done this?

My daughter's phone appears to be struggling to hold a charge.

Not on an iphone 5, but I have replaced a screen and battery on a iphone 3GS about 5 years ago.

It isn't hard if you have patience, do the research, have the right tools, and keep track of all the screws, parts, and connections.

Also you might want to check your serial number on Apple's website.

https://www.apple.com/ca/support/iphone5-battery/

They are (or were, not sure if it is still valid) free replacement batteries for certain iphone 5 serial numbers.

Quote:
Apple has determined that a very small percentage of iPhone 5 devices may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently. The affected iPhone 5 devices were sold between September 2012 and January 2013 and fall within a limited serial number range.

If your iPhone 5 is experiencing these symptoms and meets the eligibility requirements noted below, Apple will replace your iPhone 5 battery, free of charge.

I took apart my old iPad just to see if I could put it back together. Had all the tools, followed along with a YouTube tutorial, etc. I got frustrated, broke the screen and threw the whole works in the garbage.

I had this happen to me 2 months back on my iPhone 5. Brought it to the store and they gave me a new one for $100. I was in a bind and going on vacation so just did it. It was a swollen battery and it was a pain for a couple days when buttons would automatically press after awhile.

It is Apple telling you it's time to buy a new iPhone. These days, electronics are designed to just break on their own after a couple of years.

Nice, was just looking into ordering a new battery but looks like I'm getting one for free!

Heads up, that program isn't valid anymore for most of the phones. Apple will only replace it if it's within three years of purchase.

The program covers affected iPhone 5 batteries for 3 years after the first retail sale of the unit.
Apple stopped selling the iphone 5 in 2013, so most owners won't have a phone that's valid anymore.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I was able to have the Apple Store look at it, confirm a swollen battery, and give me a new one (same model) for the cost of a battery replacement. Fair deal.
