The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon to a one-year contract, two-way contract.
Wotherspoon, the 57th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, just finished his third season with the Flames organization. The 23-year-old netted a pair of goals and added eight assists for 10 points and 16 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Stockton Heat in the AHL last year in addition to playing 11 games with the Calgary Flames picking up one assist.

Good. I still like Tyler and I think he's ready for the NHL, at least as a 7th d-man. I'm not sure he's going to get much more from being in Stockton. His main competition at camp will likely be Kylington, so it will depend on how good Oliver is at that point. This is assuming that Smid will be going on LTIR for the last year of his contract, otherwise it's all moot.

Cool, glad to see Spoon signed. I was beginning to think he was going to be cut lose with the rest of the AHL'ers they dumped. I do hope he pans out this season. There's also a fair chnce he gets leap frogged by a couple of younger more flashy guys this year too. Will be something to keep an eye on.

I'm pretty high on Kylington, but ever since that other thread regarding the Swedish article, there seems to be this feeling that he is close.
I don't think he is close at all. He scored 12 points last year, for an offensive defenceman. He needs at least a full season in the AHL putting up at least over 0.50 ppg before he should even seriously be considered a legitimate top 6 candidate.
Karlsson spent only 12 games in the AHL, but that was because he put up 11 points in that time frame.
There's no rush at all for Kylington. He's 19 years old. Give the kid some time. He's playing the most difficult position and it took Brodie years to finally make it. Shouldn't be any different for Kylington.

I agree with what you're saying, but just to clarify on the Karlsson comparison, he didn't come to North America after being drafted, he spent his year after the draft playing in Sweden for Frolunda where he put up 10 points in 45 games so a little bit different situation.
