Unsanitary Restaurants - how many have you eaten at?
Front page of the Herald today has a stomach lurching story on restaurants that have flunked their health inspections:
The full story has some details on restaurants written up:
http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...237468&k=35374
A list of the 48 places closed by the CHR at one point or the other. Unfortunately, my count is 6 for the number I've eaten at in the last year.
http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...0ee6df2116&k=0
Some don't surprise me being on that list but others I'm amazed. Krispy Kreme? OK, to be fair, a lack of hot water doesn't alarm me as much as roaches. Hell I ate Shwarma station on Saturday.
The article goes on to say that the CHR is considering a "HealthPass" style system where inspection scores are posted at the door. About time IMHO.
Interesting to see how all this came from the Auditor General's report. See - accountants can indeed use their powers for good.

Reason: Recognized another restaurant from the front cover I've eaten at... taking me to 6.

I am at zero but then again i only spent just under a year there.
I am not a fan of fast food but i did like Opa! i think it was for a quick snack.
plus your subway is much better than the **** over here.
The best place i ate at was Centini's but i was lucky enough to have met Fabio and his wife Chevonne and did not have to pay but the food was excellent.

I just ate at the Harbour City Restaurant a few weeks ago at a wedding. Reading that makes me really ill.

I'm at 0 for that list, but remember people, these were just random inspections, if you knew what went on in resturants, no one would eat out. Trust me I was in kitchens for 8 years.

In the last year - One (unless Krispy Kreme being listed twice count for 2).
I'm surprised at the major chains listed. Dominos, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen, Denny's, Mr Sub. I would have thought a corporate office would keep an eye on their franchises.

I'm not surprised. One of the major fast food resteraunt operators in this country (they own two significant chains) consistently has appalling conditions at their establishments. I'm surprised though because they don't appear on this list. But I've stopped eating at any of them because it is just too disgusting for me...

I used to work at the Oak Tree at the U of C, and it was fairly clean. Well, except for the deep fry oil.

Whew only 2 restaurants out of the 48. Still pretty sick though, I hope in the future they'll have to post inspections outside of their restaurant. I think I'll still bring my lunch these next few days and not eat out.

i believe you mate. Also a hell of a lot of people who work in kitchens spend most of their time snorting coke and wanking in burgers.
Man, the good day/days/years/life.

I'm not surprised about Signapore Sam's. When they used to have a location by the Ranchmans in the early 90's it was rumored that they shut down because they were recycling or reserving food.
My duaghter wanted to eat at Arby's on 32nd AVE a few weeks ago. Now that place is disgusting and I woudn't be surprised to see it on the list in the near future.

A lot of sanitary things are cultural and I guess being Chinese myself dulls you to it but you realize that many ethnic restaurants will do these sorts of things and it's accepted because that's how it is in their home countries - many ethnic food preparated methods will have food sitting out in warm conditions as per traditionally prepared. The CHR calls that unsanitary unless food is kept hot or frozen but it's just the way it's done and nothing is done unless people get seriously ill.
That said, I'm not defending these places but you'd have to be dumb not to realize that many restaurants you eat at all have these sorts of violations to some degree "in the back" where it's unseen. I just accept it because I know it's not pretty back there and I rarely eat out anyway.

I'm sure if you haven't been hospitalized yet your good to go...I'd just refrain from playing russian roulette.
I've eaten at 4 of them in my life but none in the last year. I wonder if there is a current list that is online.

Haven't been to Harbour City in years, but I knew it was a sty the moment I went there the first time.
