American Corn Pops
We've got the thread about the Coffee Crisp but that reminded me about American Corn Pops. Does anybody know why they are so different here in Canada? Here in Canada, we have large dry balls of roof-of-mouth ripping balls of hard corn meal.
In the US, they have smaller, football shapped nuggets of corn meal that have more air in them and are more overall glazed with a sugary goodness. I always buy a box of American corn pops when I'm in the states and I can't figure out why Canadian corn pops - even the generic brands are all the way they are and not the way the American ones are.

Didn't Corn pops used to be called "Sugar Corn Pops"?
Was there something about trying to make it more healthy?

Those things absolutely tear the **** out of the roof of your mouth. But they were so tasty...
It was such a dilemma as a kid, it was the only sugary cereal my mom would let us eat, so I had to decide whether i wanted a torn up mouth and blue milk, or white milk and good mouth. Stupid kid that I was, I usually chose the blue milk.

I seem to recall that Oreos used to be different up here as well but a number of years ago they changed to the more "American style" Oreo.

No, it's definetely Corn Pops. Google it and you'll see American corn pops are different and it tastes nothing like Captain Crunch.

Maybe we should be thankful we didn't get the extra sugary goodness..or we'd be the fattest country on earth. Either way I don't think we're too far behind our southern neighbours in terms of health/obesity.

Actually, the Canadian Corn Pops reportedly contains more sugar!!! That's also why the American one was also better tasting to me. More clean corn crunch and delicious.

American pop in general is different then Canadian pop since the Canadian version is made with sugar while the US version is made with high fructose corn syrup. Because of this, Canadian pop is superior to US pop.

I'm sure there is some degree of high fructose corn syrup in our Canadian pop as well. It's on the ingredients list.

I'd like to get on my high horse here for a moment. We weren't allowed any of that sugar crap cereal for breakfast. We had mush with some brown sugar [porridge] every morning and I never craved anything else. Feeding kids a regular heavy sugar breakfast probably leads to hyperactivity and then drugs to calm them down. Another vicious circle.

Cocoa Pebbles used to be the best breafast ever when they were basically cocoa flavored Rice Krispies. Never been the same since they went to that puffed corn crap.

When it comes to food, I've noticed that Canadian anything tends to be better than American anything. Especially meat products. They arent kidding when they talk about Alberta Beef being superior to anything else.

7-up/Dr. Pepper (Cadbury-Schweppes) is actually its own bottling company in the States. Other pops that they own include Cactus Cooler (which is a great orange/pineapple type beverage), A&W (including the clear cream soda), Orange Crush and others.
In Canada, those products are all bottled by Pepsi. This is also why there's no Sierra Mist in Canada because that is bottled by Pepsi in the U.S. It wouldn't make sense for Pepsi to release a product that competes with its own line in Canada.
By the way, the best cereal was Pac Man Cereal.

The absolutely biggest most hugest difference between similarly named products in the US and Canada??
Cheez Whiz.
The crap down here is almost unedible. Its mostly used as a dip (put the whole jar in the microwave, add salsa and you have a meal) as opposed to a food type.
My mother sends me jars of the Canadian stuff regularly.....that and HP sauce.
Red Rose tea is taken care of for a while thanks to Cheese. Cheezies are not for sale in the USA and it makes me sad.
