Sounds like Alberta 20-30 years ago. Most of the ambitious, high-achieving kids I knew in high school and college left and went to Vancouver or Toronto. In the early 90s the U of C closed down the Geology and Geophysics student clubs because of lack of enrollment.

Alberta is still the fastest growing province in canada. This time because of births, immigration and high wages. Alberta generally has a younger population so there's more people starting families.

The difference between the last oil bust and this one is that back in the 80s and early 90s the rest of Canada was doing quite well, so Albertans had a good chance of landing a better job in Toronto or Vancouver. That's not the case today.

Maybe it's reading this thread but as I was schlepping around town today I started to notice a lot of Albertan plates, a couple obviously loaded with all their worldly goods, sadly reminded me of Stienbeck and the Joabs, not really an appropriate comparison I suppose but hard not to make.

I'd have to imagine a lot of them are vacationing too, especially with the low dollar. I was out there the other week and talked saw a ton of Alberta plates on the ferry, but most of them were camping, etc.

Well, with the wait times these days...

People saying that ohhh well since the economy is bad a lot of Albertans are taking more economic holidays in BC.

When I was a kid, those were our holidays - good times or bad.

Totally. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the people who've lost their jobs, but then there's the crowd who are merely settling into a lifestyle that's considered average to above-average for most Canadians and freaking out about it.

Where do rich families take their vacations, and why? Travel is wasted on anyone under 10.

So no one really needs to travel. How would you feel about poor Polak if he'd never been to Europe? Or...Poland. I guess.

Its overrated. One should stay in the place they're born and live to serve the state, everything else is Bourgeois extravagance that should not be tolerated!

Yeah, I remember my kids hockey team was discussing where to go for the end of season tournament. There were options of Edmonton, Red Deer, Winnipeg, etc. One father said take them to Airdrie, they won't know the difference.

I think going to Mexico once a year still qualifies as leaving the place you were born in if you're from Alberta, doesn't it? I may need to consult Google maps for this.

EDIT: Hell, tell Europeans you're driving 8 hours each way to go on annual vacation and they look at you like you're bat####.
