What a difference a week and a half can make (from July 31): http://news.nationalpost.com/sports/...ming-out-party

A medal for Oleksiak, the Canadian record holder in women’s 100m fly and 100m free, is not anticipated. It is not out of the question, however, especially considering the explosive youngster should have a leading role on the women’s 4×100 free relay squad, a fringe medal contender.
“For sure, it’s a lot to take in,” the lanky teen (6-foot-1, 150 pounds) said. “Right now, I don’t think I’m really nervous, just because I have a lot of distractions — my friends, my family, joking around with my teammates and everything — so I’m not super nervous going in.”
“A PB (personal best) would make me really happy,” she added. “Just racing at the Olympics. I’m going to be really, really proud of myself. Just trying to make Canada as proud of me as possible.”

From Arash Madani on Twitter... Relaxed as hell in the ready room, totally chill on the podium hearing her anthem, may scream and cry meeting Drake. This girl is awesome.

Penny's race should be coming up on the west coast NBC feed in the next 1/2 hour or so.

Poor Elliot, he was doing so well. Almost made it through the Olympics unscathed.

That was a nice interview. Funny to see her watching the replay of the race for the first time as well as her family's reaction. Her dad was just stunned.

Man, NBC knows how to drag s**t out and fill it with commercials. Anyone who bad mouths CBC should have to watch NBC's Olympic coverage

They didn't show the medal ceremony live for that race either. Ok, fine, Americans win a lot of medals, and they were following the womens gymnastics to track the likely gold there.
But, this was the first black American female athlete to win an individual swimming medal.

I don't think anyone can ever bad mouth Canadian coverage of the Olympics compared to any country. Now with the CBC app and website being able to watch whatever, whenever? And on TV tonight, saw beach volleyball that wasn't Team Canada (or the US), and some table tennis with two Chinese players. You think NBC shows non-American athletes if they can help it? Nope. Maybe if there's some major record or some major mishap/trainwreck factor, otherwise its a lot of flag waving and patting on the back.
NBC has cut large chunks out of opening and closing ceremonies for years now.

Yay, finally a gold for Canada! I definitely got a few dirty looks at the office cheering for Penny while the Aussie world record holder finished 6th.
Also, Friedman's Phelps gaffe has gone viral internationally. Combined with the pig comments it has not been a great couple days for the CBC.

Haha yup. I'm glad at one point during a zoom in shot halfway through the race I noticed the names on the swim caps and already knew he had the names reversed, so I wasn't confused. But it made the final length extra cringe-worthy for me as I was embarrassed for him, was really hoping he'd figure out it before the race ended.
When he finally realized it after the race, I had to laugh how he didn't say anything for a solid 3-4min afterwards, I was just picturing him swearing up a blue steak outside the press box haha. Poor Elliott, he had done a good job until then. Good thing he got to call an iconic Canadian race right after that.

not a good start in the heptathlon, Thiessen-Eaton already 50 points behind Ennis-Hill after the hurdles in 6th overall
and for the guys, the Dutch girl Nadine Visser who finished 3rd is really pretty.

Oh with the whole "OR - to the American, 1 - to Penny"? I think that was actually the scoreboard at the event itself, not him. When they showed Penny's parents in the crowd, everybody looked confused, including the people holding American flags in front of them.
...unless you're referring to another gaffe he had during that race that I'm mis-remembering.
