What ratings bonanza? That ship is already gone, they racked up the ratings in the primaries, hence why they've been so much harsher (i.e. fairer) towards him lately. They don't need him anymore, they milked what they could off of him.
But they need competitive debates to drive more advertising, they need that Clinton and Super Pac add money. If the super pacs aren't spending on Anti-Hillary adds because trump doesn't have a chance the networks lose out. There is still lots of money left on the table leading to the end of September.
The debates are going to be a disaster, we know this because Trump is a child and he can't debate. They'll be total laughers to watch, the only way anyone will think Trump won is if they're rating it based off "Who reminds you most of a school kid?". But they'll rate well because we all love trainwrecks. So the huge debate number is locked in as long as Trump shows up. And if he doesn't then he'll lose probably 40 states at a minimum and that will be that.

They have the debates. People love a slaughter, and Trump on the same stage as Hillary is a quadriplegic fighting a Jedi.

That's a bit much. I'd hardly call Hillary a debate jedi. She'd only be considered a good debater compared to someone terrible, like Trump.

I think many of you who think that the election is a foregone conclusion are significantly over-estimating the intelligence and education level of the American population. There's a ton of time to go and most people aren't even paying attention to politics yet.

I'm not saying Hillary's a Jedi, just that if one fought a paralyzed man in a wheelchair, it wouldn't be much of a fight. Which it won't be. That debate is not a debate of equals.

I think you aren't reading the polls past the surface then. Over? No. But Trump has the narrowest path in recent memory, and he keeps going into insane-o mode to try and contract his base even more rather than expand it. As IFF has pointed out, with Colorado and Pennsylvania becoming close to locks, Hillary can now lose Ohio and Florida, and still win easily.

Trump has the support of 74% of Republican women. Romney had 90% and lost. Donald has turned Georgia into a swing state. The state that lost two hockey teams to Canada could vote Democrat.
The closer we get to November, the differences between Hillary and Donald are not going to get smaller.
One candidate is running a general election campaign like it's a primary, and the other is acting like she's three months away from her life's ambition.

A total meltdown of a candidate would probably be great entertainment, something different that might attract a lot of casual viewers. Plus a lot of the money that won't be spent on the presidential race will just be spent on house or senate races.
Also, Clinton and the Dems don't want to take chances.
Trump-Loving Christians Owe Bill Clinton an Apology
Conservative evangelicals were unwilling to offer forgiveness to a Democrat who asked for it. But they have freely offered it to a Republican who doesn’t want it.
All of this signals something bigger: an end to meaningful evangelical power and influence. Since the late 1970s, conservative Christian leaders have claimed their political engagement is about morality. They have claimed it is about character. They have claimed it is about values. They have claimed it is about biblical principles. Pious preachers, thunderous televangelists, and moralizing activists have sold America a bill of goods about their pure motivation for decades. But evidence indicates that evangelical political engagement is really about cultural influence, social dominance, and power.
Trump-loving evangelical leaders should either apologize to Bill Clinton or admit, after all these years, that they, too, have a character issue.

It's all so very entertaining.

This interview is old obviously, but "the most militant military human being who ever lived" might be the all-time Trump quote. Oh yeah Trump backed a troop pullout, the same thing that he blames for causing ISIS (or it's Obama or whatever).

I don't know how anyone can actually still believe he is in it to win it.
Why is he running in your opinion. I think Narcissism so he needs to win to validate himself. The reason his behaviour is erratic is because he is not a genius manipulator he just is exactly who we see.
That chart begs the question... why are Republicans generally more inclined to make stuff up?
I'd imagine a lot of it is the concept that "truth has a liberal bias."
You have Pence saying condoms aren't an effective method of preventing STDs--while they're proven to be a very effective method for that--presumably to promote abstinence instead due to ideology.
You have most of the Republican party ignoring climate change science and lying about the effects of human activity on the CO2 levels in the atmosphere, because otherwise they have to actually deal with the problem.
Democrats have plenty of issues, certainly, but they generally don't pick religious ideology over scientific fact, and they at the very least pay lip service to the idea that our dependence on fossil fuels is a problem for our environment, just as two examples.

The average republican voter is plain less intelligent than the average democratic voter, therefore Lying to them is a more effective tactic.

By all accounts Trump and his campaign have spent no money thus far, nada, zip, Butkus, they haven't placed an ad anywhere.
Therefore I still hold to my original premise, it's a joke candidacy he thought up with Bill Clinton, I think it was massively more successful than they dreamed but I can't see any evidence that the campaign is anything other than a vast hoax.
I suspect (hope) Trump has achieved the impossible, he has shown the GOP its future if it goes the Palin Cruz bring on the crazy route.
As a bonus he's also clearly exposed Russian attempted manipulation of the system.
