I found Johnson frustrating.

On the one hand, he had excellent insight and analysis as an ex player. Great stories, and a real understanding of the game at the NHL level.

But on the other hand, he came into each game with so much personal bias, and he could never shake it, no matter what actually unfolded in the game. And yes, arrogance.

If he could have just delivered his insights in a level and professional manner, he could have been a great colour guy. But he got in his own way. His personal biases always left a bitter taste that spoiled his delivery.

Edit: apologies for the incorrect usage of insight and incite

I didn't much care for Johnson when he started, as I found him very negative, especially toward the Flames. This went away though and I thought he was one of their better commentators.

Yeah well people who have worked with you tell me you fart too much and steal their salad dressing from the fridge. Rumour mongering flatulent monster

Rogers has fired a ton of people. Have they added any talent this year?

They have done a piss poor job with the rights since taking over

This, he came in with the story and would only reluctantly change it late in the game if it was obvious it was warranted. Which is too bad, because I liked almost everything else about him, but I couldn't get past the fact that he had a story he wanted to tell, when his job is to tell the story on the ice.

One example off the top of my head was during the comeback kids year. I think it was against the Jets and the Flames were on a roll, had come back in several games, but got down 4-0 going into the 3rd. The whole game Johnson was on the Flames about how this will not work forever, they are a bad team that just gets lucky, can't just be a 3rd period team, (all of which are and turned out to be true) but that there is no way that it will happen in this game. Right from the time the puck dropped. the Jets got up 1-0 and he got louder about it. Every time the Jets scored, more yammering about it. Third period comes, Flames score 4 goals and Johnson is stuck eating crow.

They lose in OT and of course Johnson gets in a little sheepish, "I told you so" comment, but he had already packed in his story reluctantly after the Flames tied it up.

They overpaid. Most knew it at the time and it is becoming even more obvious now with the numerous layoffs that continue to occur in both television and print media. I can't say I necessarily blame them...I'm not sure what I would do either if I was in Their position.

They overpaid to help protect the television model that most have grown to hate...and the only product that continues to drive that old television model is live sports. The NHL deal was made to save that model or at least prolong its inevitable death.

It hasn't worked. It won't work.

As bad as things are could you imagine how much worse it could be for RSN if the Jays didn't have last season's success? A few years ago they were drawing 17k fans a game and few people in Toronto cared about them. The TV ratings for the Jays are probably helping offset some of the NHL losses.

Now if they only could get rid of Ron MacLean and David Amber I would be happy. I have tried watching the Olympics and instead of interviewing the athlete MacLean has some asinine story about some guy in 1920 who has a great nephew who played in the NHL with the swimmers second cousin. Ruins the whole experience for me, which he does on HNIC also.

And David Amber is just brutal, worst interviewer ever.

Rogers is crushing it with their baseball coverage this year though. I think I heard that last year during the regular season the only had 3 broadcasts with over 1 million viewers, this year they're almost at 40.

There's obviously nothing wrong with being motivated by money, and I understand that it's a job; however, I think it's how the message is presented. You can talk about money, without coming across as a complete prick, i.e.:

Spoiler!

That's all I'm saying.

Having just watched my first bit of WCH - the last period of NA v Rus - it was a great 3rd period but the best part for me was having Ron Maclean back at the panel controls at the end of the game. I didn't realize how much I missed Ron in this role until just now.

I thought he was the worst member of the panel.

Ron Maclean is such a treat to listen to. He made the panel much better.

Actually, beyond being a treat, he's attentive, observing and he also listens to other panel members. You can't escape that experience and knowledge of the game.

When he speaks, I am truly interested.

Not enough giggling at and fawning over the other panel members?

George 100% ruined that skit if he would have just STFU instead of acting like a 5 year old.

Why do I find him insufferable? He seems to have to be the smartest guy there, he pushes his own experiences, he loves him some Oilers.

I never said he was worse than Strombo, though I didn't share the hate for George - I thought he was in the role of average, non-insider fan.

I don't lke him anymore either. All he does last 5 years is take over the air time with name drops. That is how a bunch of my friends reference him now, 'Name Drop' is hogging the convo again.
