He was going to but it would cost $500 to cancel. He has to pay for their crappy smart tv before he can cancel.
They did reduce his bill but by only a small margin compared to the initial discount he was given.
And funny they didn't show up for two appointments after the lady who called me after they missed mine made it seem like it was a fluke error. Thankfully my cancellation fee was a lot less and I cancelled on the spot.
This is something wrong with their system and it's a major flaw.

Was it a 3 year contract? Thats a joke, I've been very unimpressed with Telus and am glad I switched!

Yep 3 years. It sure is a joke. And once they knew he would be more reluctant to cancel with such a high cancellation fee they didn't care at all about him. He's been with Telus for 8 years.

2.4GHz, or 5GHz wireless? 2.4G doesn't have the throughput for these kinds of speeds. You should be getting at least close to 150 on 5G networks though.

I tested yesterday with my laptop and was getting 170mbps on 5ghz. Somewhat close to the modem. A friend got 170mbps with his android cell phone but I can't remember the make.

He calls and after being on hold for an hour he is told that there is no appointment and the offer he was given two weeks ago was withdrawn because he took a free TV two and a half years ago. No courtesy call to let him know and no call to tell him the appointment was cancelled.
Thank god I switched to Shaw.

Wow, that's crazy. I'm with Telus and on a 3 year contract with 8 months remaining and I got that free smart TV when I signed up. They matched the Shaw deal with no issue. The next morning I had the 150 internet.

Might want to keep checking your bills because up until yesterday he thought the deal was still on as well.

I don't know much about this stuff. This is my router http://www.linksys.com/ca/p/P-E8350/
are there any setting I need to look at?
Does it depend on the device?

I am moving out of my apartment next week to a new place. I am currently month to month with Shaw.
Do you guys think that I can cancel my service (as I plan to anyways) and create a new contract at the new place? I have heard before that they won't give new account promotions to old customers until x amount of months have passed.

It's a new address, I don't think they'll have any idea it's you at the new place so it should be okay to start a new contract. Lucky you'll get that sweet new customer promo.

Yup. Worst case scenario, sign up with a significant other's name, child's name, family member name etc.

Both are "enabled" and using the same SSID. Does the wireless device automatically connect to 5Ghz or do I have to "tell" it too?

In that same SSID config, the newer devices select the "best" frequency based on your signal strength, congestion and other factors. Older devices though will require you to force the band you want to be connected on.
If your device/router are wave 2 802.11AC capable, the router will bandsteer i.e. force the device onto the band with the best speed based on the settings you have configured on your router. More than likely though you are on 2.4Ghz if your speeds are limited like that.

You should probably add a "-5G" onto the end of the 5GHz SSID. As mentioned, devices will pick the stronger signal, and 2.4 works better at a distance, although you don't get the speed.

Ok a few more questions:
1. If I do this I will need to reconfigure all my devices to connect to -5G?
2. After doing this, if a device doesn't connect to wifi, that means that device cannot connect to 5g as it is too old or not supported? In this case I need to connect to 2.4g SSID?
3. Would doing this mean I have 2 SSID set up?
Thanks again.

Telus upgraded me today. Quite happy with the speed.

Basically, you'll end up with 2 SSIDs - one for 5 GHz and one for 2.4 GHz. By default, I connect my devices to 5 GHz (if supported). I have a few that aren't dual band, so they just go on 2.4.
The only time that I have opted for 2.4 over 5 (on a device that supports 5) is when I'm trying to stream something while in my detached garage. The 5 just won't make it there reliably.
If you leave the SSID for 2.4 the same name, anything that connected to it previously will continue to do so. And then you can hand pick what you connect to the new 5, if you like.

For ASUS users:
Even though I joked earlier about "only" getting 155, my average speed test was actually a fair bit lower. 110-120, despite the odd peak near 150. It didn't seem to matter what speed test server I used either. Even though that's still overkill for my needs, I was a bit curious (and jealous) of you guys and your 179 boastful speed tests. This may seem odd coming from the guy who had 25 Mbps and was completely happy with it, but it just seemed that something was slowing it down.
I noticed that my ASUS router (RT-AC66U) CPU was maxing out when I was doing a speed test, so I started to suspect that my router may be the bottleneck. Apparently there are two features that automatically disable hardware acceleration: traffic monitoring per IP, and QoS. I guess I had enabled the per IP traffic monitoring, so hardware acceleration was automatically disabled. So I turned off IP traffic monitoring, rebooted, verified that HW acceleration enabled itself, and ran a speed test. Boom. 179 Mbps.
So if you're an ASUS router user and suspect that you're not keeping up with CP averages, check to see that HW acceleration is enabled.

Mine is an AC68U, and it's been fine. The only time I have issues is if I turn on QoS, that cripples the connection.
But like someone said before, for these speeds at home, QoS is unnecessary for the most part.
