Interesting interview with Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) who produced Phantom Power and Music @ Work:

http://www.macleans.ca/culture/arts/...ragically-hip/

I’m sure that just like everyone else that loves those guys, it’s impossible to put into words how I feel now, and how brave I think they are, and in particular Gord is, to go out this way. It’s the path of most resistance. It speaks to what kind of people they are, that he’s willing to put his life on the line to go play for people one more time. It’s just — I just love those guys.

You nailed it, Surferguy. "A game 7 atmosphere romancing a campfire song" and "a crowd so loud you couldn't hear the band". It really was one of those nights, wasn't it?

Had a few chills for the first few songs on Monday. I have been to numerous Hip concerts, but this was special. Knew I was going to get tickets for Wednesday so wasn't that sad that it would be potentially the last time I was going to see them. Taking my wife and son on Wednesday. Will be my Son's first concert, he might not truly appreciate it now, but in years to come he can say he was there. This is the first Hip concert that I truly can say I was totally sober for!!

I'll be there tonight. Really hope they play My Music at Work, my favorite Hip tune.

Stare in the morning shroud and then the day began
I tilted your cloud, you tilted my hand
Rain falls in real time and rain fell through the night
No dress rehearsal, this is our life

Ah jeez. I've been randomly breaking down into tears today thinking about tonight. So excited but so damn sad.

The clock watching is going to be unbearable today, is it 8:30pm yet?

This song is truly beautiful.

I'm going tonight - such mixed emotions. Excitement, sadness, anticipation...all of them.

I think this is my 6th time seeing them. The first was at the Saddledome in '98 ('99?) for the Phantom Power tour when I was 15.

Songs I'm hoping for, that they haven't played much, if at all:
Looking for a Place to Happen
Locked in the Trunk of a Car
Long Time Running
Highway Girl

Oh man I'd love to hear Highway Girl. Just don't see how they squeeze it in if they keep with the 4 songs/album block format. I doubt they play 4 off the EP. Maybe they squeeze it in with 3 off of Up to Here. That would be awesome.

Listening to all Hip all day today at work, luckily it's a good headphones day. Wheat Kings got to me, but then Fifty Mission Cap came on to cheer me up.

Been on another Hip listening binge since Monday's show. In Violet Light has to be on of their most underrated albums. Some absolutely amazing tunes IMO.

I had a friend kill himself recently. I identify one specific hip song with him, and cry when I hear it. It has been on the set lists. If it is played tonight I will be a mess.

I've been doing the same. Listening to the full albums in song order and release order. Just so, so, good. Luckily I'm solo in the office and can crank it.

Its really interesting to listen to how both his voice changed as well as the depth of the music and writing. Just an awesome band.

I'm working my way through the discography today in reverse chronological order in anticipation of tonight's show. I do regret taking them for granted more in recent years, and the finality of everything has really hit me, so I have been really immersing myself in their music recently. Perhaps my feeble attempt to atone for that sin of drifting a little. It wasn't like I didn't continue listening and enjoying their music, but rather their music made up less of my total listening as my tastes expanded.

The irony is that while I was branching out, their music was actually getting even better and more diverse. So many emotions about this over the past couple of months, and it is really coming to a head today.
