According to several forums one of the main focuses was netcode which is why they even have a dedicated network section so you can monitor your performance.

I didn't think it could be done, but this game is worse then the already bad NHL16, definitely won't waste my money on another junky EA made game.

I think the problem is they haven't figured out how to get the game to play at realistic speeds over current networks. Next gen they might get it. Pings have to be around 20-30ms for it to be able to mimic real hockey.
