Honestly, if you are looking for a real quality lake weekend, your going to need to leave the province. The shushwaps and Mara lake are about 5 1/2 hours away. Beyond that, okanogan is about another hour and you can take your choice of wonderful beaches along Vernon, Kelowna and BC.
Alternatively, 5-6 hours south is Whitefish, which is another great spot. Border can be a nightmare, but it is tons of fun.
If your set on Alberta, options are limited, sylvan, pigeon lake, Alberta beach, they range in the 1.5/2/4 hours respectively...none are that great.

Buffalo Lake (Old Mcdonald's farm) is actually quite nice, but I'm not 100% sure if it's available to the public if you're not camping there. It'll be busy this weekend though.

There are exactly zero good beaches in Southern Alberta. Really, if you value quality, go out of province.

This isn't Manitoba. Head west to BC and there's lakes and beaches as warm and beautiful as you'll find anywhere in the world.

You can try Little Bow Prov Park. Theres a beach there. Not a great beach but its kinda what is available. If you have a boat that lake is way better.

August Long weekend in Manitoba is one of North America's best kept secrets. BC beaches cannot hold a candle to the Whiteshell, Lake of the Woods or the Viking Festival in Gimli, or Grand Beach.
Maybe I'll check out Lake Newell by Brooks? Sylvan is just too crowded.
