I quoted the picture above because whenever I am at the HHoF, the cup or "replica" has been there and on each of the 3 occasions, I have managed to distract the workers and planted a kiss on this exact panel. That is what being a fan is all about for me.
And shouts to you bc-chris. what a great day!

So is the handler guy always within like arms reach of the Cup, or does it let the players go hog wild with it?

i'm sure it likely depends on who the handler is and who has the cup (in terms of the players personality and their reputation)
i talked with a friend who had been at recchi's cup party in 2011 and he told me the handler guy was a total cup-nazi, so i was prepared for that (and gave justin a heads up)
the handler we had - walt - was great. a really fun guy to be around. he did have rules but the most restrictive one was no one could lift the cup over their head unless justin was also holding the cup.
at the private family stuff walt was really in the back ground (around for the first couple minutes but after that usually in a different room), but at the public event at the west kelowna arena he was pretty much right beside the cup the entire time (i guess to be more of a deterrent to someone doing something stupid).
as i mentioned before i think a lot of it also has to do with the player's personality. justin is a really down to earth guy with a really easy going personality and you don't have to worry about him doing something stupid. i know when we went and did the pics with my truck that walt was no where to be found outside - just chilling in justin's house. we could have gone for one heck of a joy ride! ha!
i know walt did mention that the most undesirable part of his day is always the 'after party' when the guys go out to a club becuz everyone in very 'happy' and they are out in public and you never know what other people who are 'happy' might do

Friend of mine had the cup for his day years ago and the way it was explained to me was, no one who hasnt won it should lift it overhead.

I also read once that the main handler guy (white hair guy; appears in commercials) said that a lot of guys take the Cup to cemeteries to visit with friends and families that have passed away.
He said he stays at the edge of the cemetery and affords the player all the privacy he needs.

My buddy is friends with one of the guys who won it while with the Red Wings. During his day with the Cup they ran out of booze. The only one sober enough to drive was the Cup handler. So the Cup handler drove the NHL player to the liquor store to stock up. While they were gone, a bunch of the guys tea bagged the Cup and took pictures. I'm sure they sanitized it before chris drank out of it.
