It may have been serious or in jest, I just think it is an interesting topic so I referenced it when I started the thread.

I don't see CHL as a superstitious person, but I also don't see him as much of a comedian. His comment could go either way.

For me? It doesn't matter. Do whatever. Touch it, drink out of it, raise it above your head and pretend you're a champ.

The only thing you have to "earn" is getting your name on it. I'd say that's true for anyone, NHL player or not.

It's a trophy, not an idol. The cup itself doesn't matter, it's what it represents. You don't get that just from touching it.

It matters enough that they keep it in a secured bank vault.

I think it is kind of cool to hold the cup with such reverence that you adhere to not doing certain things. I would touch the cup, take a photo with it, but never raise it above my head or drink from it. Those are items, for me, that are reserved for people that actually win it.
But I also wouldn't get my under-roos in a knot over someone else doing it.

It's actually just in Bettman's kitchen. A very expensive salad bowl for most of the year.

During business hours, you can enter the vault at the Hall of Fame where they keep it. The Great Hall at the Hall of Fame is actually an old bank.

In 1989 I got to touch the cup, hold it above my head and get a picture. I was 14, wearing an LA Kings jersey (new style after Gretzky was moved there) and neon Sorel boots. Its been all down hill in my life since. I can't stress enough for people not to make the same mistakes I did.

Neon boots, people. Kings jersey. Immortalized on film. Learn from me.

Though I also held the cup the same year as the Flames. Win some, lose some.

Back story: The cup was on tour and stopped here in Saskatoon. Overnight it was under the supervision of our police force. My Dad was a high ranking official and several of us kids got to see it in person.

I thought the only way you could lift it was if someone who won it, passed it to you. as the cup is always guarded by phil or one of his guys.

anyways, if I had the opportunity to lift it I would, since the likelihood of me winning it is very low given that I am not currently employed by an NHL team not am I about to be drafted at age 50

i asked the guy that travels with the cup. paraphrasing what we chatted about....

there are 3 'cups'

the original cup (the top part of the current stanley cup) is in the vault at the hockey hall of fame

there is an exact replica of what we all call the stanley cup - that is on display in the hall of fame

what i hung out with all day yesterday is "the cup"... the one the team gets on the ice. when you actually look at the condition of the cup, there are all sorts of scratches and dings.... and that just makes it even more awesome becuz you know ever scuff has a story

with regards to touching it... i'm not that superstitious

Hopefully all voodoo and hexes are restricted by Provincial boundaries and in effect you've doomed the Canucks to a winless future.

Although its not like they needed any help.

Stanley’s original Cup from 1892, known as the “Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" (above), was awarded until 1970, and is now on display in the Vault Room at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

In 1963, NHL president Clarence Campbell believed that the original Cup had become too brittle to give to championship teams, so the “Presentation Cup” was created and is the well-known trophy awarded today. (Skeptics can authenticate the Presentation Cup by noting the Hockey Hall of Fame seal on the bottom.)

The final Cup is a replica of the Presentation Cup, which was created in 1993 by Montreal silversmith Louise St. Jacques and is used as a stand-in at the Hall of Fame when the Presentation Cup isn’t available.
