You know, I was all for shouting NIMBY but now that I took a quick look and read what they are suggesting, it doesn't make much sense. They are a few small lots that they want to build a house with 2 suites on each one. Wouldn't it make more sense, as one of the residents suggested, to sell the lots to the people who want to buy them, and use the space directly on 16th (or 17th) where they could build one larger complex that would be far more efficient and denser as affordable housing?

The purpose of affordable housing in this context is to integrate small units in a large community.

OK, but as a city department, shouldn't we also be looking at getting the best value and doing this as efficiently as possible? There are plenty of larger apartment buildings in the area, and more being built.

That would make sense except that I don't believe that the lots are really that desirable and therefore good revenue generators. I think the articles stated that the lots are only 20 feet wide so it would require some sort of special permit and it would be an extremely narrow home. The lots are also right along the 16th Ave concrete wall. I doubt any developer would pay a "large" sum of money of this land.
We aren't talking about a 50 foot lot with city views that would fetch well into the high six figures.

Well ya and in the article adjacent land owners were actually interested. Those people have money, and if they want to give it to the city and it makes financial sense than maybe they should. Or maybe this has all been studied and they chose the best option. Tough to say with the information present.

The projects and council estates were great value and very efficient. However, they were also very effective at concentrating poverty and creating ghettos. Pepper-potting has become central to effective and efficient affordable housing strategies.

OP?
Is it fact or fiction what I'm hearing from people working on the "Old City Hall" renovation about the "gang shower" and lack of partitions?
My understanding is the code requirement is to have partitions for privacy but I'm getting info that our Mayor has requested this code requirement be overlooked?
If true, Nenshi can break the rules?

You're accusing the Mayor of instituting a policy of mandatory gang showers?

Rules can certainly be bent when it comes to historic restoration.
I'm not sure if there is any specific code requirement for what you talk of. Certainly nothing that would be unbendable.

I'm sure dropping the soap makes that rule moot.
CRINGE AT MY OWN AWFUL JOKE
But seriously, what is going on at Old City Hall where there could be so many people showering at the same time, at work, that this could actually be a thing?
And if this is going on, are they hiring?

Greeeeen Line
I think
Edit, it is indeed! Here:

Calgary gets lion's share
Calgary is the big winner in Saturday's announcement, with $258.9 million earmarked to lay the groundwork for the Green Line LRT expansion — including utility relocations along the route, bus upgrades and land preparation.
"Investments in public transit are some of the most important investments a government can make," said Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi in a press release.
"I'm very pleased to see all three orders of government working together to keep Calgarians moving efficiently. This early work on the Green Line LRT corridor helps us get even closer to building this important piece of public transit."

Edmonton left out
Absent from the long list of municipalities receiving funding was Edmonton, although St. Albert, Strathcona County and other nearby areas did receive funds.

I received a Christmas card and letter today from my Wildrose Constituency office and they are doing a fundraiser where they will take your Christmas tree in for recycling for a $20 donation. Apparently the city isn't picking up trees this year. Damn city.

Well...if the City isnt picking them up and the Wildrose will and I get a tax receipt for it then...yeah, thats brilliant.
Otherwise mine is getting cut up and put into my black bin in very small and discreet pieces.

You could do like we did back in university...shove it in the fireplace up the chimney in once piece, and light 'er up.
*do not do this. Despite the VERY cool jet engine afterburner look you get out then top of your chimney, this is a really really bad idea.

The city will still have lots where you can drop off Christmas trees.

This is an embarrassment to CBC for posting Facebook comments in their actual news articles.
