I think Bennett really has to break out huge to avoid a bridge deal or he will be paid quite a bit less than Monahan and Gaudreau. Monahan played 3 full seasons with 2 of the seasons scoring 60+pts and over 20 goals each year with a 30 goal season under his belt. Johnny has seasons of 64 and 78pts under his belt so he has proven a ton. Bennett burned a year playing well in the playoffs, and followed up with a season of 18 goals 36pts. He doesn't have 2 really good seasons that both Monahan and Gaudreau have that makes everyone comfortable to go long term big money.
I have a feeling Bennett is looking at a 2 year $3-3.5M contract next summer

I doubt GMs secretly hope their players will suck so they can fit everyone under a salary cap. The main objective is to win. If Bennett has a great year, I'm sure they'll be happy to lock him up long term...then deal with trading higher priced contracts or buying out certain players.
