I have been using Astrill for a few years now and I find it works well. Lots of options for configuration.

I use Unblock-us as well and it worked for Gamecenter, HBO Now, and Hulu. Worked for Netflix up till a couple weeks ago. But find I watch Hulu a lot more than Netflix anyways.

There was a thread over on reddit.com/r/Canada about this exact problem. https://www.reddit.com/r/canada/comm...sage_from_hbo/

That's what drove me to make this thread.

For live-streaming the only viable option seems to be paying for a VPN and then paying for HBONow.

Thanks for the recommendations, I ended up going with Private Internet Access.

Just one problem though. Still can't get HBONow. You cannot download it on your PC. has to be some sort of device like an iPhone.

Fine, so I go to get it on my iPhone... HBONow is not available in the Canadian Appstore.

So I try to switch to the American appstore. You need an American billing address / CC information to switch to the American app store.

They've really got this on lock down.

IIRC there's a workaround for that using pre-paid Visa cards.

This all really flies in the face of their claim that it is easier than ever to get HBO in Canada...

Use Bluestacks to put android on your PC. Then download the app, then use a pre-pay credit card.

Ended up doing this.

Used a Beverly Hills zip code/address for my billing info. 90210. ahahaha.

I occasionally have some packages delivered to the border and go down to pick them up. The company I use is TSB Shipping, in Point Roberts, WA.

Point is, when I registered with them I got an American address with my name on it, so I called TD Visa and was able to add it as a billing address. I successfully got around the whole "American billing address" situation on an order.

Unblock-Us stopped worked on Netflix for me a month or so ago. I use ViperDNS now. Works great, I even signed up for Hulu Plus since it worked.

So is there a general consensus on a quality VPN that allows region hopping to watch Netflix...specifically Netflix?

I tried Unlocator a few weeks ago and it worked, although you had to have a special set-up to get the US region. I do not see those instructions there any more.

Any suggestions?

Ok, one thing I"m still not wrapping my head around. I get that it encrypts traffic between your browser and whatever website you are using but how does this keep you safe on public WiFi? For instance, when you are connected to public WiFi but don't have your browser launched. Is it an app of sorts that runs in your background or a browser plugin?

Thanks for the suggestion. Signed up for the trial yesterday, extremely easy to setup on the ATV. $20 a year seems like a steal.

I have been using AirVPN for several years now and I would highly recommend them.

As far as I understand it, think of the router as just the last server/relay point for your communication and not anything special (assuming you're not running the VPN client on your router - I am assuming your VPN client is run on your PC below):

The message is encrypted at the VPN server, and sent over the internet, back to your PC, encrypted. Your PC then uses it's security key to decrypt the packet and see what's in it.

So basically, you've passed an encrypted packet between you and the VPN, and then the VPN goes out on unencrypted visits to the sites you pointed it to, so the world knows that PIAVPN went to BBWlover.com, but then the data from BBWlover.com is encrypted at PIAVPN, and all the rest of the internet see is an encrypted packet (which you know is fulll of BBWlover content) moving from PIAVPN's serves to your computer, including your router - it is just handing off the encrypted packet to your computer as the last touchpoint for the packet. All your router sees is an encrypted packet to be delivered from PIAVPN to your PC.

Now, that packet is on your computer and it is decoded by your VPNClient key, and then it displays some amazing BBWlover.com content for you for you!

*replace BBWlover.com withwhatever else you're trying to shield prying eyes from. I use it for visiting the Calgaryherald!

Also I am non-technical, so this might be a bad example...

Can anyone answer what is probably a simple question but just trying to get my head around this whole VPN thing.
I use GCL here in the UK but we do get blackouts, which I am trying to get around. I watch on my main TV which is fed via network adaptors, so to use the VPN do I need to set it up on my router because the game goes no where near my PC? In addition I guess I would need to keep turning it on or off via the router whenever i didn't need to use it??

Thanks

When signing with Bell business internet service, you can enjoy their VPN solutions to share voice, data and video with customers, partners and suppliers. You can of course stream what ever you want.

You'll have to give us a bit more information on your setup. How is your tv fed via network adapters? Do you mean you have a 'smart' tv that is plugged into your router via ethernet and use an app on the TV to watch or do you stream from your phone etc?
