In the end it doesn't matter, yet this thread exists and people post in it for some reason...
Are you telling me that if they aren't signed by Aug 14 that you won't be concerned or care? What is your cut off date and why is it the right one compared to everyone else?

I bet both Kucherov's and Gaudreau's agents are waiting to see what the other gets. Kucherov's agent probably wants a Gaudreau salary, because he's close to as good in the regular season, but unbelievable in the playoffs, and Gaudreau's agent probably wants 500k-1mil more than Kucherov because he's the better offensive player.
They're fairly close comparables, both drafted 2011, both have two really good years in the NHL. Coming right off their ELC's.

I agree, they are the two most important forwards to the Flames future, which is exactly why they aren't rushing the process, and making sure they get the best deal they can. I mean, we're talking about not even August yet. If we're coming into September, and they're not signed, then I'd start to worry.

I get that people are keenly interested, but there is virtually no reason at all for the frequent expressions of concern that continue to appear in this thread.

No. I won't be terribly concerned if both Gaudreau and Monahan are not yet under contract by 14 Aug. The cut-off date for me is in the first week of Sept before the start of the WCH. This is the much more reasonable point to begin expressing concern because training camp is a fairly inflexible deadline for contracts to be signed. There is absolutely no pressing matters for either party to complete these deals by the second week of Aug.
* I will suggest that if the Flames had any arbitration cases to work through this summer, then I would expect that they would have had a greater urgency to ensure that the contracts were signed earlier. But since this is pretty much the last order of business before the start of the season, that urgency is just not there.
So, relax.

You know Gaudreau has a say in it too?
If he doesn't want to spend his entire prime here the Flames can't force him to.

In the end it won't matter when they sign, if they end up signing and signing long term. I do agree, the longer it goes the higher the "likelyhood" is that the Flames might not get the contracts they want out of this (I don't think there is any risk in regards to them not signing (obviously)).
I think everyone's worry is with Johnny, and I think it all stems around this belief (for understandable reasons) that he may want to go back east as quickly as possible. However, I do think people are underestimating the potential that Johnny's camp may be pushing for a shorter term deal also because they think it might be the bigger money maker long term. There's risk to it, but this could be more about the dollar amount (and giving up UFA years) than it is I want to be UFA as quickly as possible so I can go east.
While this dragging out can be a little worrisome, on the flip side it's hard to ignore the positives as well. Tones of positive statements from both Johnny and Sean so far, which could just be good media training, but is also very rare if when things go really sour in negotiations. Also, things in general seem to be taking longer with similar players on other teams this year too, so this could also just be a sign of the times given the un-certain cap with the Canadian dollar, and given we really are at the front end of upcoming future franchise players locking in 7 to 8 year contracts this early on..........both players and teams are likely treading lightly.

This. I think this is what concerns a lot of people, and will continue to do so until he has signed.

Yeah it is a concern, but just cause he signs a 4 or 5 year deal instead of 8 doesn't mean we'll lose him come UFA.
Put together a perennial contender and I guarantee staying and continuing to win will seem pretty tempting, even compared to playing for his hometown Flyers.
That's the only thing the Flames can control. Surrounding him with great players so that when the time comes he doesn't want to leave.

I'm in Cranbrook right now on my way to koocanusa and had lunch with a couple prohockey types and when this subject was brought up, it was suggested to me that an announcement could come by Friday and one even said he was surprised it hasn't been announced already as it was his belief the deals are done.
Take it for what it's worth but I didn't think we would hear anything until late summer as there are zero pressure points for either side right now.

I realize that but if he wants a shorter term deal than the anticipation is the cap will be much lower. 4 years leaves him as a RFA which is fine but 5 years is a death blow sending him to UFA at 27 (turning 28 over the summer).
Personally I would rather the Flames pay him $7.5-8M per for 8 years. He can still sign a max payday after that with us or whoever he wants.

Maybe they're waiting for Johnny to finish school so they can bring everyone back for a press conference.
BC's summer term ends August 5, according to their website.

I get that feeling as well. I think the deals are done, but they want to wait until they are both available at the same time for a press conference before they officially announce it. Maybe that is just wishful thinking on my side.
My predictions would be:
Gaudreau - 6 years for $6.25/yr
Monahan - 7 years for $6.25/yr.

Johnny is doing online courses, plus he's in Toronto right now at the Gatorade camp with other NHL'ers.

Nice article from Sportsnet: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/j...rld-cup-coach/
Quote:
General manager Brad Treliving had no update on Gaudreau's negotiations to offer reporters Wednesday at Brian Elliott's introduction, joking that it's merely a matter of term and money. So, talks between Treliving and Lewis Gross, Gaudreau's agent, go on.
"Honestly, I’m not even involved," Gaudreau said, "I try to stay out of it as much as possible. I don’t like getting different numbers in my head. Hoping for this, hoping for that, how many years—it’s just, I don’t really enjoy that stuff. Whatever my agent thinks is best for me is what I’m going to do. He does a really good job with his players, so I have all the faith in him that he’ll get something done.”
Gaudreau flew in to Ontario from his home in South Jersey this week to surprise the under-20s at GCamp but made sure to spend time with his boy Monahan in London, Ont., before making his way to Toronto.
“I’m not sure how his deal’s going, but we’re on the same page," Gaurdeau said. "We’re both really excited we’re in Calgary. It’s a great city that’s so passionate about hockey, and the fans are great to us. We both want to be there for a long time with how great that city’s treated us the past two years."
Monahan was quiet, even with Gaudreau, until he got to know him better. Then he opened up. Their friendship is real.
"He’s an amazing hockey player with a great shot. I just love playing with him. He’s a great centreman and an even better guy off the ice. He was an assistant captain for us last year and did a great job of that," Gaudreau said. "He’s great for us younger guys.”
|
Some nice comments about Hartley as well:
Quote:
In addition to a new contract, Gaudreau will be skating under a new coach in 2016-17. The winger was surprised by Bob Hartley's firing and made a point of attending his former bench boss's hockey camp this month.
“It came out of nowhere because the season had ended and it came like a month after. Next thing you know, he was let go," said Gaudreau, noting that it was great to catch up with Hartley last week in Pennsylvania.
“Bob did so much for me my first two seasons there. I could’ve ended up on different teams and different situations, but Bob did a great job with me. He gave me a ton of power-play chances," Gaudreau said. "He taught me how to play in the defensive zone, where to put my stick on the ice."

Someone is likely gonna have to be traded. All eyes on Wideman
