So who sits tonight? Smoak? Upton in the field, Jose to DH, EE at 1st? Carrera is sitting too I guess. There's a lot of options now, too many probably.

With Saunders and Bautista both free agents at the end of the season, this makes sense particularly because both are likely not to re-sign in Toronto.

TO probably eats all the salary on the deal for getting him at almost no cost beyond the money.

I don't know tranny, Davidi makes it sound like the Padres are eating quite a bit of the contract. Guess we'll find out soon.

I read that San Diego is paying "A LOT" of the remaining $22 million owed over this year and next. Still no word on the A-ball player who's going the other way.

I'm not really a fan of this move at all. Seems like the Jays have a good clubhouse and chemistry and this can potentially wreck that without improving any of them areas of concern.

Great acquisition. Depth for sure, but this really solidifies our lineup and we won't have to see Barney in LF anymore (even though he did fill in nicely).

Basically upgrades Carrera. Better speed, more power, better defender.

For what we gave up? He's basically free.

Whoa Rogers picking up a player for basically cash?

Guess they realized a playoff run in 10's of millions extra's in their wallet!

Don't see it mentioned anywhere here. Hansel Rodriguez is the A prospect we gave up, and not official, but sounding like SD is eating a large portion of salary.

OF upgrade complete, now we have a few days to bolster the pen.

Agreed and its nice to have depth because you never know who might get hurt. The Jays still need to find that shutdown Lefty relief pitcher though.

Another nice thing about this is he plays a decent CF, meaning Pillar can actually take a day off here and there. That will come in handy.

What upgrade do you see in the outfield? Is Upton any better than Carerra/Saunders/Bautista/Pillar? Not in my opinion. In fact, it the guy is going to ride the pine, I think Carrera brings more value as he's a good contact hitter. Upton is another Justin Smoak who you aren't going to want to use in PH situations.

I think one of Saunders or Bautista is going to get moved before the deadline, and I'd argue then that this is a downgrade.

Upton is not going to be a depth player. He will play everyday.

Better than Carrera yes. Most stats will say so.
Didn't you also predict a Saunders crash back to earth? Maybe that happens and the depth is nice to have.
Can spell Pillar off.
Look at his WAR this year, 1.9 already.

And honestly TAO even if you don't like the player, for the acquisition cost (if true SD is eating a large chunk of $$) then it's hard to complain about this move. We just watched a full two weeks of Junior Lake and Darwin Barney in the OF.

80% of the time he'll play every time!

Smoak will see his playing time cut (Thank God), and Jose, Saunders, etc will get more days off

Encarnacion
Bautista
Saunders

These guys all are free agents. You gotta think at least one of them isn't coming back next season.

I do like the player a the acquisition cost, especially next year when Saunders and Bautista are gone.

My problem is that they are in win now mode. In the current year, there's no spot available for Upton. The Jays have somethings that works. Not sure why they want to mess with that when the move doesn't address any current holes that are holding the team back. To me this has the potential to wreck chemistry. Why fix what isn't broke?

Looks to me like the Jays are trying to cheaply fix next year's issue ahead of free agency. Most year's I'd be fine with it, but not when we are in the middle of a Pennant race.

That is next year's problem. Jays are a World Series contender this year.

A bit unfair of you to dismiss that argument as "next year's problem" when you've been consistently harping on what they are going to spend/do next year. Getting a guy under contract for next season is probably one of the reasons they made this deal.

Seems to me that this deal fills one of the holes - which is a 4th outfielder off the bench. Zeke was doing OK, but tough to know if that was going to hold up or not. I don't think Upton will be a true every day player. I think his playing time will come from Saunders and Jose getting rest days (either fully or by DHing), Jose playing some 1st, Smoak not playing every day, and just a general rotation. I bet he played 3 out of 4 games or something like that.
The bench wasn't great, so this helps with that - as well as adding better speed on the base paths.

Assuming the acquisition cost is low - nothing to dislike about this deal.
