If he really wants to play there for two years and then get traded to a bad team because they can't fit in a contract for him, go for it I guess?

I'm with you. Cut out the middle man and just sign with Buffalo now.

Potentially win a cup in those 2 years. Or he can sign with the Sabres and be on a bad team for those 2 years as well?

You go to bad teams to get paid.

See: Schultz, Justin: Edmonton Oilers

You take less to go to good teams to win.

See: Schultz, Justin: Pittsburgh Penguins

Or to get paid after you're bored of winning: Lucic, Milan.

Why would a bad team trade for him? Really "bad" in this case is a matter of internal perception... a bad team won't trade for a RFA about to get a hefty raise. A team that thinks it's on the rise will make that trade or an already contending team with cap space will make that trade.

He'll get paid the same either way (and probably have a better shot at hitting the bonus money thresholds in chicago) so why not? Don't get me wrong, personally I'd prefer he head east since I don't want the west getting stronger but it makes plenty of sense for him to go to the 'Hawks.

Oh, you guys. Never miss a chance to put down the Sabres!

Where'd the Flames finish last year again?

It's been almost a month since free agency started and this kid still hasn't signed, and once a week or so his agent pokes his head up and says "this" team is on their shortlist.
Is it possible that the NHL has blacklisted him after the whole Nashville fiasco, and then the wasted Buffalo trade?

No that is ridiculous.

Also, he isn't a typical UFA. He isn't free to sign elsewhere until August.

Ahhh right, I totally forgot about that. Would be really interesting to see if he were blacklisted.

Legally? You're right. But him, his advisors, and agent have allegedly acted in bad faith with Nashville. His team may have led on Buffalo as well, which resulted in the trade.
It's therefore entirely possible that the GMs of the NHL are quite a close knit community (seeing as how they work together all the time) and may not want to deal with Vesey and his representatives.
I'm just wondering if something interesting might happen when he goes UFA

ZERO chance. Teams will be lining up to add him. He will have his pick.

Stupid of Nashville to take a player in their word with his loophole staring them in the face. Paper transactions, thats what matters.

Also, how many teams tell prospects they will sign them in the future only to have prospect not develop as well and then not sign them?

He owed Nashville nothing. All they did was draft him and have him at their development camps, like their prospects and some UFA prospects.

Considering that Tim Murray flat out said that they had no contact prior to the trade that's baseless rumormongering (and if they did have contact then the Sabres... 1: Are Liars, 2: Were engaged in tampering, 3: Are idiots for not making the pick conditional). I'm more inclined to take Murray at his word... they had a surplus of picks so they took a small gamble (which still may pay out) on getting a guy with sublime talent.

I'm usually very pessimistic with the Leafs, but I have a feeling he will sign here. I am basing this on nothing. I have no insider knowledge.

I think his short list will be Hawks, Leafs, Bruins and Sabres.

Toronto-- probably can promise him top 6 to start. Not sure they have the cap space for him.
Hawks -- Not sure they would promise him top 6 to start. Not sure they have the cap space.
Bruins-- Did the Bruins pick up anybody to replace Ericsson ? They have the cap space
Buffalo-- will be able to promise him top 6 to start. They have the cap space.

I would not count out Buffalo quite yet.

Blackhawks are terminating Rundblad's contract. Opens some salary space.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/chicago...medium=twitter

Quote:
The Chicago Blackhawks and defenseman David Rundblad have agreed to a mutual termination of his contract, freeing up salary cap space for the franchise.
The Chicago Sun-Times first reported the story Tuesday morning.
Because the contract is terminated, there will be no lingering salary cap hit for the perennially cap strapped team. This means Chicago has $2,398,026 of salary cap space going into next season according to General Fanager.
