Just had the tech finish up at my place. 181mbps download speed. Insane!! Only took about 15 minutes total setup time.

First, ditch Superchannel. It's promo price is $9/month, but it's regular price is $18. It rarely has programming on it that's watchable compared to Movie Central.

That would take you down to $172.89. Ask for it without Superchannel for $159 IMO. That's 80 each for internet and TV. The TV programming without bundling would be $75+$18=$93, so you'd be saving a little bit there. Some of the promo pricing from Shaw for 3 or 6 months can be $60-$80 cheaper when bundling though. So maybe suggest $139 as your opening price and see what they say. Good luck!

Is there any way to make them give you a promo discount for more than 6 months? They wouldn't budge on that for the TV package we got.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ All the promo prices on their site are normally for three or six months. The Internet 150 is being deep discounted because it's tied to a 2 year contract with cancellation fees. Unless Shaw starts offering TV discounts with contracts, I doubt we'll see promos longer than 3-6 months.

So we chalk this up to competition wins? Canada has a rather bad rep when it comes to internet speeds and good pricing.

Yes and while it's probably only a small step in the right direction, the Shaw guy I was talking to said there was a lengthy queue of people waiting for install when this came out and a response they didn't expect.

Meanwhile Telus is acting like this isn't a big deal and they don't need to act because "Telus has better customer service, we are top rated".

So I upgraded yesterday to 150. I'm getting 175Mbps download and 15Mbps upload if I plug my laptop into the Hitron modem.

However, I have the modem put in bridge mode and have my own router (Netgear N600). When I'm using Wifi OR when I'm plugged into the router, I'm only getting 40-60Mbps download but still getting the full 15Mbps upload. Obviously the router is the bottleneck.

Trying to troubleshoot settings in my router but not sure where to start. Anyone have any ideas?

Your wndr3700 may not be able to run that throughput, although it should be a bit better than 60. The n600 is an N based router, obviously, with a 600mbps rated speed, but that's up and down, so 300 a side, but that's marketed speed and its common to see them below 100 in real world tests. I'm not even sure I would use an N750 rated router. Or any N based router.

If you're going to use your own router, it's only good if the router you use is "better" than the one they use, and I'd suspect the hitron is better than anything not at minimum a 1300AC router. The one you have is 5+ years old. If you want to use your own, upgrade to any of the 1300, 1900, 2700, 3200+ routers, but anything over 1900 is overkill because they just add additional 5gHz channels, so you're not getting 1300+1300=2600, you're getting 1300 and another channel of 1300.

The signal strength and throughput of the new routers is far superior. So think about "why" you want to use your own router. If it's just because that's what everyone else does? Because everyone says the ISP routers are no good? Or because you actually have your own QoS settings, or firewalls, or use your port assignments uniquely? If you do none of that, and its just because of what people say, then don't bother, the hitron will be just fine!

I mostly agree with what Aleks said. But before replacing the thing, troubleshoot a little more.

Your router specs say it has a gigabit WAN port, so it should be able to handle the speed.

Is the QoS (quality of service) enabled?

My math was wrong.....the n600 is 300/300 for each frequency, which under ideal in lab tests it's 150/150 up down per frequency, so it's perfectly within reality that it won't push more than 80 in the real world with interference etc.

Long story short, likely need newer tech router. May be lucky and a QoS setting (dynamic maybe? If they have that on there) to try before that point but there's no way it will pull the 170+ people are getting because if physically can't (remember, lab testing 150 max).

And gigabit would just be the LAN ports anyhow, not the wireless

Yeah, but the LAN ports should still do more than 60. I'd look at the QoS first before replacing the router.

Wow, glad I saw this thread. We've been paying $75 a month for Internet 30.

So for $5 more I am quintupling my speed... that's an easy decision.

Yup. And Telus aren't too keen on keeping us, lol. I'm counting the days until Shaw is installed!

What computer are you connecting to? I know it might seen ridiculous but there is a possibility that your computer has a card that cannot accept anything above 100.

The speedtest app on the phone is also unreliable, I average anywhere from 25 to 170. What Phone are you using.

As mentioned before is there any other networking items within the house?
Ps4 was lagging yesterday which sucks but I called yesterday and they did some changes to the settings and today I'm getting above 150 almost every time I was doing the speed test.

It seemed to fix the problem so we will see if it lasts. The computer I have is the all in one HP from Costco but I don't know of any limitations.

I'm using the iPhone 6.

Haven't really used the Internet today but from the tests I've done it seems to be good now.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll just get Shaw to enable the wifi on the Hitron and just use it.

I originally bought the router because my old Shaw modem/router sucked. I got dropouts all the time and the wifi speed wasn't great, so I tried using my own router and it fixed those problems. There's no real reason for me to keep using it other than the idea of having two separate units doing two separate duties, instead of one doing double-duty, but it sounds like it shouldn't matter anyways.

Should I be able to get 150+ speeds on my Nexus 5? Download speed tops out around 40-45 on 2.4,, 75-80 on 5.0. Upload speed is consistently 16+ on either frequency.

What could be causing the HUGE discrepancy in download speed test results?
Are you getting these speeds wireless or with a cable connection to the computer?

I asked for Premier TV and Internet 150...

As a current customer I didn't qualify for the promo pricing on Premier package.
They offered a 10 dollar discount for 1 year on the TV package only.

I was not impressed.

I will call back in a day or so to see if I can speak with someone else.

So you got offered Internet 150+Premier for 162.90 for year 1, 172.90 year 2, and then regular rate after that (which would be 228)?
