Icon35 New York Islanders may leave Brooklyn for Queens

Report: Isles may leave Brooklyn for Queens
http://www.tsn.ca/report-isles-may-l...ueens-1.530708

Quote:
Bloomberg's Scott Soshnick reports the Islanders are in discussions with the owners of the New York Mets to building a hockey arena close by Citi Field in the borough of Queens.

Soshnick reports that Islanders ownership has been in discussion with Mets owners for months over a potential move. The team is being advised on the deal by the Oak View Group, headed by former Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment chief executive officer Tim Leiweke.

The capacity of the arena for hockey games is 15,813, making it the league's second-smallest venue behind only the MTS Centre in Winnipeg (15,294), meaning that the average gate for each game will suffer compared to other arenas. Montreal's Bell Centre is the largest with a capacity of 21,273. Players have also complained about the poor quality of the ice at Barclays Center.

Yeah, it's really not the capacity or the ice quality that are the problem, so much as...

What would be in this for the Mets?

Further development of the area around Citi Field and arena ownership revenue?

It seems the company that owns the Mets and Citi Field is in real estate development, so I guess there could be synergy. But if it was interested in arena ownership revenue, why not just buy the Islanders outright when they were for sale? Maybe they'll get a better deal from Islanders ownership desperate to get out of Brooklyn.

Just seems weird to me. Oh well.

The area around Citi Field/USTA is just a wreck. When you look out over the right field line at Citi, you get a wonderful view of rusted cars and ugly chop shops. Seriously.

Perhaps more importantly, it would probably also be a good excuse to pull the Islanders onto SNY for television broadcasts - which the Mets partially own.

I assume it would be part of a larger sports/entertainment district hub type of thing like a lot of cities have now.

Right now, the neighbourhood around Citi Field isn't that great, and there's a huge parking lot right beside the stadium where Shea used to be, so there's room to put something like this.

Citi Field is isolated enough that no one has any reason to go there if the Mets aren't playing. Putting an arena there would give the area a second draw and would make it much more likely that the businesses that open there could be successful.

So the Islanders are just gonna rotate between the five Burroughs? One each year? Interesting concept.

It was like that in Phoenix when the Coyotes first at started playing in the Suns' arena, before they had their own. Saw a game from right there - missed every goal. Went and demanded my money back - and got it!

The old America West arena with it's limited view seats. IIRC they sold them as such at a reduced rate that included a hot diggity dog and a soda. My late father and I sat in one of those seats but never thought of asking for a refund.

We had no idea what we were in for until we sat down - if was early in their first season IIRC. We asked to be moved but it was sold out - early novelty I guess - so we sucked it up. But it was terrible. Don't think they had thought of making them cheap seats yet, so they were pretty sympathetic to a Canadian family who knew full well they'd been screwed.

Four island Burroughs only or else they need a name change. Sorry Bronx.

At this point I think the Islanders have a better chance of getting a moat dug around another New York neighbourhood to makevit an Island rather than getting a new permanent building.

They had strong roots on Long Island that differentiated them from the Rangers. Bit of a shame that they couldn't remain in Uniondale.

Now they're becoming a vagabond team. They might be better off building a new narrative in Quebec City.
