This whole convention looks like a harbinger of revolution (or its first little steps).

I still hold to my original thesis, this is all a joke candidacy thought up between Bill Clinton and Trump to lock up the presidency for Hillary.
Plagiarism, inviting Cruz to dump a steaming pile of turd on the floor, these are to simple to be accidents.

This is such an odd post. It's the American Politics thread. The Republican Convention is currently happening. The nominee is Trump. The whole thing is about Trump. We're talking about Trump. What should we talk about?

How often do you get to watch a clown car get hit by a train in slow motion, what else could anyone talk about but Trump?
Even if you like him it's still utter farce.

To the GOP, abortion is murder--but slowly poisoning a community with pollution and toxic waste is the free market at work.

They only like "small government" when it comes to paying for the federal services that they benefit from in the form of taxes.

So I'll stockpile my birth control now, he'll do his best to make sure I can't access it. Because his religious beliefs trump my personal decisions about my body.

But if Texas wants to whitewash the Trans-Atlantic slave trade out of their textbooks (they do), why should the Federal government allow them to purposefully miseducate the youth that are going to grow up to run this country in the future?

If Texas and other states want to provide non-scientific abstinence only education to their students--despite the fact that it often leads to higher cases of teen pregnancy, higher abortion rates, higher instances of STIs, etc--why should the government allow that to happen, when its the taxpayers who will then be paying for those unplanned babies?

To an extent, yes, states should have some ability to govern at the state level, but there have to be checks and balances, like you aren't allowed to purposefully teach wrong and misleading information to the children in your care.

Also my rights as a woman shouldn't depend on which state lines I live inside. The rights of gay people shouldn't depend on what state they're in. The ability to vote shouldn't depend on the state you live in. Unfortunately, a lot of states take advantage of "states rights" to limit the rights of exactly those people.
While I agree with most of what you said you can't ignore jurisdiction just because you don't agree with what is going on. That is the whole point of separation of powers.

uhh, you can't use jurisdiction to excuse limitation of rights. Don't be crazy.

Those NATO comments are down right frightening, no wonder Putin likes him. The whole point of NATO is article 5, that one country being attacked is the same as attacking all of NATO.

Wow, simply wow. This man is truly insane.

MR TRUMP, Ukraine has been invaded by the Russian Army!!

Well cops are getting shot, I can't be bothered to worry about some Asian country.

And the GOP will not kill Medicare, arithmetic will.
The United States is a supposedly a federated system. The Feds should govern issues that transcend state borders. Because education is an issue that should know no borders the Feds should have the responsibility of governing the system. The problem is that Americans don't know how to govern. The idea of the Feds setting standards and then regulating accordingly is just foreign to them. Works in all other industrialized nations in the world, but they just can't figure out how the federated system actually works in their federal system of government.

If you want to change the specifics of the way your schools run--scheduling and hours and vacations and exactly how you handle various specifics--go for it. But it should absolutely not be allowed for a state to literally lie to students.

There are things that should be left to states, but other things should be regulated. There should be no reason a poor black child in Mississippi gets a vastly less thorough education than a middle class white child in Massachusetts.

Yes, there should be separation of powers, but states shouldn't be able to restrict the rights of their residents or lie to their students.

Just to muddy the waters more, ratings for the GOP convention thus far are underwhelming, with total viewership down slightly compared to past years.

Interesting interview on ABC with the AG of Virginia re the crowd getting ugly and physically intimidating Mrs. Cruz towards the end of her husband's speech, and his intervention to escort her from the floor. Says he felt he had to get her to safety, having to get between her and members of his own delegation.

Lots of baboons in attendance...

This convention is such a train wreck. It went off the rails on day 1, and hasn't recovered.

Tomorrow we get Trump-maybe he can pull a rabbit out of a hat, but so far his campaign looks utterly incompetent.

The Cruz snub is really interesting, and it had to be 100% deliberate, right down to the pregnant pauses where he could have endorsed him, and then didn't. A lot of people are speculating about Cruz' long term plans, and he may well be eyeing 2020 right now. However, I also wonder if this is on some level personal: Trump insulted his wife, repeatedly called him a liar, implied that Cruz was less American and might not be eligible for the presidency due to his place of birth and insinuated that Cruz' father was involved in the Kennedy assassination.

All of which is to say, maybe the Cruz snub was about his long term political ambitions--but maybe, just maybe, some part of Cruz was also thinking "payback is a bitch."

Honestly, Cruz is done nationally. He can still get a Senate gig I'm sure, but this election loss (which I assume is happening) is going to shatter the Republicans and really cause a change in their methods I think. They can't just keep going further and further to the right and losing the big chair by more and more.

Cruz has shown what he always has, that he can't work with others, no one likes him in his party. That was fine for Trump this cycle because he was just so loud, but that's not Cruz and after this beating, things will change and he'll be left out.
