UPD: Leafs sign Matthews to max ELC including max bonuses
https://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs...-matthews.html
Quote:
Toronto Maple Leafs top draft pick Auston Matthews remained without a contract on Wednesday, the sticking point apparently over performance bonuses that GM Lou Lamoriello has historically avoided in his time as an NHL executive.
There is no reason to panic yet, with hockey still two months away.
But some find it a curious way to do to business for a team that has invested heavily in building through youth, and spent so much time selling the pain of losing to land a player of Matthews calibre.
“This one, to me, feels foolish,” an NHL source not involved in the talks told The Star. “I don’t know what Lou’s reward is if he wins for the amount of risk you take by going this direction.”
The Leafs not only risk alienating Matthews and his camp — souring future talks when Matthews will have more leverage — but they may be sending a negative message to players around the league about how the team treats stars, he said.
“I hope Lou’s not holding his breath,” said an executive with a rival club. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Lou, but I would not be wagering the house on (the Leafs) being able to hold that line.”
Lamoriello declined an interview request.
It is believed Matthews is asking for an entry-level contract consisting of $925,000 in annual base salary (that includes a $92,500 signing bonus) as well as $2.85 million in performance bonuses, the same terms Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Buffalo’s Jack Eichel, the top two picks a year ago, received in their first contracts.
Patrik Laine, the second overall pick this year, settled for slightly less ($925,000 and $2.6 million) this year with Winnipeg.
It’s believed the Leafs — and Lamoriello, specifically — are balking at $2 million in performance bonuses, basically a payday if Matthews, for example, ended up as a top-five finalist in rookie-of-the-year voting.

I believe he can't get a schedule B bonus for Calder as (getbak likes to point out). but seems to be a strange way to open up a relationship with a potential franchise center.
And no I don't think this means he will pull a Lindros

lol
why would you haggle over a few ks in performance bonuses with your potential franchise player, especially when you're swimming in money? Just stupid.

I respect Lou and the way he does things. But I love those bonus contracts. Gives the teams some wiggle room that season, while motivating the player. I wish more contracts (not just ELC) had bonuses like that. Actually gives the player incentive to not mail it in as much.

What a dumb stance to take. Lou will be gone before they have to sign him to a real contract anyway, so I'm not sure how much damage this will do to the relationship long term.
Overrated GM dining out on 20 year old achievements.

Idiotic by Lou if true.
The guy is a dinosaur IMO. Had a lot of success with the Devils, but left them an utter mess to clean up.

So hypothetical question. If Matthews says screw it, I'm going to the KHL for 3 mil per for 2 years. Does he then re enter the draft in 2 years? Or does he become a UFA? It would be hilarious if he does that and then signs with Arizona in 2 years lol.

I have a better chance of winning Lotto Max than the Flames trading Gaudreau right now. You heard it here first.

I don't think he has any interest in making a contribution to this site. He just wants to push as many buttons that he can.

Because he played last year in Switzerland, he's considered a European draft pick, so the Leafs own his rights for four years. If he's not signed by June 1, 2020, he would become a UFA.
This is a really silly stand for Lou to make. Every single first overall pick since the Salary Cap came into place has received the maximum "A" & "B" bonuses, as have a number of the second overall picks.
The Leafs aren't in any danger of exceeding the bonus cushion and screwing over their in-season cap situation that way, and looking forward to the next three seasons, it still shouldn't be a problem even if a bunch of their young players make the jump to the NHL.

It's not only because he's a dinosaur, but because he's a dinosaur who spent his entire career GMing a budget team. Lou doesn't know any other way of doing business and isn't about to start now.
I know the bonuses factor into the cap, but this is nothing but petty by Lou.
