Is that standard for any other sports?

Not sure about that. Oldham has been an arbitrator for the owners and union since 2004. Seems rather unlikely to me that the Wideman appeal was the first time his services were necessary.

Don't think Oldham has been involved in anything until Wideman.
The Kovalchuk arbitrator, Richard Bloch, was fired by the NHLPA after his ruling and replaced by George Nicholau:

In the vast majority of collective agreements in Canada, both the employer and the union must agree to nominate an arbitrator to hear a grievance.

Agreed, the NHL has been incredibly petty and operated with the lowest of professionalism and class in this instance.

Resolute has mentioned this before, the league doesnt have a choice.
If they believe that the Arbitrator misinterpreted the CBA then they cant just 'let it go' because his decision becomes legal precedent and effectively alters that same CBA which is pretty much as bad as it gets.
Its not about the PA, its not about Wideman, its about the CBA.
If a third party goes around changing the rules of the CBA then it isnt the same document anymore.

First off, we don't know if there was even a market for him. And second, this isn't about how many games he missed. This has been talked about to death.

Bettman looks bad in this, if it wasn't for deflate-gate he would look like a complete idiot.

Why? Because a few fans are totally butthurt over the fact that the legal and business realities of running a $4 billion business are real?
The NHL believes Oldham ignored the very CBA his powers and responsibilities are derived from. They absolutely must challenge this.

Should they get an arbitrator to determine if the arbitrator was following the CBA closely enough?

I just can't believe the NHL won't just let it go.
He served 19 effing games.
I'm surprised the Flames aren't actually trying to after the NHL for some type of losses or damages because their player was sat for 9 extra games. The Flames are probably being a good little soldier though and not upsetting the NHL apple cart.

Well, actually no. An independent third party ruled that he should have only served 10.
