I never think of myself as a British Columbian. Although I was born in Calgary, I never thought of myself as an Albertan either. I dunno that might just be me.

I know it it doesn't get mentioned amongst Americans at all, but American Oil interests are actually behind most of America's "climate change" plans, and are actively trying to block Canadian Oil to keep their Oil flowing smoothly during trying times in the Oil industry as it's a significant part of the US economy.

That probably sounds like conspiracy theory to an American hearing it for the first time (I know wittynickname also mentioned Hilary and getting serious about climate change) but outside the States, the US's Oil control throughtout the world is very clear, and the Democrats are heavily funded in this area.

They aren't serious about climate change at all, they're just serious about sounding serious about it, because if you've noticed saying "we need to start caring about the ENVIRONMENT!!" gets the biggest cheers at a liberal rally.
What do people have against the environment?

It isn't close. The media is getting great ratings from Trump, so it's in their interest to prop him up, but the reality is that it was over long ago.

i don't think either candidate help the Oil industry situation much for Canada, so there isn't a "lesser of the two evil" side in this.

In the states the idea that climate change isn't real is an actual popular opinion. Not the majority, but large enough that stating that environmental change needs to happen isn't necessarily stating the obvious.

I don't think the average American knows or cares that the environment debate is more politics and protectionism than about actual change, however.

Climate change is just like every other issue in the states - hijacked by money and special interest.

Umm, you do realize the page you're linking to shows Trump winning in nearly 2 out of 5 times? Nate Silver was pointing out today that this is about what Kerry's lead was. Historically, numbers can still move a lot in either direction. The hope is that Trump has given himself a ceiling in the mid 40s, but 538s numbers don't capture that.

So here's how they wanna spin Melania. So that Christie saying 7% was plagiarized is legit how they wanna play it. The level of incompetence would be hilarious if they weren't a real threat to win.

Quote:
Robert Costa ‏@costareports 54m54 minutes ago
WaPo has been shown today's internal surrogate memo from the Trump campaign- Christie likely got his 7% line directly from this document...

-Memo calls Melania controversy "silly" and urged allies to argue that attacks are because Melania was "too good" and scared Democrats

-With regard to plagiarism Qs, memo says to note how only 7% of the speech is under scrutiny (a point taken up by Christie on TV Tues)

-Memo also recommends saying the Clintons are "back at it" regarding attacks on Melania and to frame that criticism as an attack on women

I think that holds true for Alberta too. You can't discuss climate change in this province without it being mucked up by politics or economics.

It's not "mucked up by" politics and economics. It IS an economic and practical problem, and needs to be treated as such (and public economics are a central political issue). When we try to separate environmental concerns from the economics, that's when it becomes a fringe issue dominated by holier-than-thou moralists*.

Edit: *or "stubborner-than-thou" donkeys.

It's weird but I realized a long time ago my life has so little connection to the rest of Canada that I don't really think of myself as Canadian but as British Columbian, I don't mean in a militant political sense but just that in most respects I have no practical contact with the rest of Canada, my whole life revolves around Vancouver and BC, if I go anywhere it's south to Washington State or beyond.

It could be because I have American relatives, so I tend to relate to myself as Canadian. I dunno. Seems to be a lot of competition with those folks when they visit

I don't really know how the convention works but is the RNC actually "voting" in Trump today?

The one thing that Harper was right on was talking about mirroring the US's environmental policy when it came to taxation.

If the US doesn't implement a Carbon Tax, there's no way that we should since it will make our goods less competitive in the States.

Obama can bluster all he wants about Alberta's dirty Oil, but we're pretty clean and environmentally conscious compared to the US Oil industry, especially when you look at the Oil fields in California.

A new plagiarism defense! It lacked 'intent':

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/0...25829?lo=ap_c1

Wonder if that's ever worked for a student caught plagiarizing. "Yeah, I copied this paragraph, but I totally intended to go back and make it my own, I just forgot!"

That's standard for the conventions for both sides, then tomorrow you'll have the VP nominee deliver a prime time speech, and the presidential nominee will give their speech on Thurs.

Obviously a presidential election should be held to a lower standard than a religion 100 midterm paper?

Couple things. First, it's being reported that the final draft by Melania's speechwriter DID NOT contain the plagiarized passages. So they were apparently added after the fact. No word on by who, but it would make sense Melania added them herself after searching "Speeches by Presidential nominee's wife".

Second, Turnitin says its plagiarism. And a reminder, when OJ walked his odds of not being the killer based on DNA were only 1 in 170 million. They really need to just own this already and stop embarrassing themselves.
