He has to be one of the most mature 21 year olds in the NHL. Hard to believe he will be starting his fourth NHL season this fall. Flames are lucky to have him and would love to see him under contract for eight years.

Monahan really needs to tone it down... He's approaching PK territory.

I don't think his voice has rose or lowered more than half an octave either direction since the day he was drafted by the Flames.

6.0 for the Monahan
6.75 for Johnny B Goode
on long term deals

That's about a 0.25-0.50m discount for both.

Why oh why do people under rate Monahan so bad?

Johnny's higher point total is due to his position played. Monahan has less points due to the fact that he had many more responsibilities away from the puck compared to a winger. Are people also forgetting that Monahan was also a 30 goal man?

Those two should get identical 8 year deals.

I think it's because Gaudreau added to his point totals, while Monahan didn't. They didn't exactly produce at the same levels this year.

In terms of points, Monahan's comparables make less than Gaudreau's comparable (Tarasenko).

this is no knock on Sean

Talk is cheap.

Monahan may be willing to leave money on the table, but his agent may not feel the same way, and I can't help but feel that if Monahan's contract was going to leave a bunch of money on the table then it would have been done months ago.

This is just a good team player in a Canadian market saying good team player Canadian market things.

That's a pretty bold prediction considering they've both already signed one. You're quite literally predicting that two NHL stars will be out of the league before 30 years old IF they sign max term.

This is a non-story with some pretty good quotes. Sounds sincere, and no reason to think he doesn't sign long term here if the Flames pay in kind. Pump the brakes on the praise for the organization though, until he puts pen to paper. Posturing in the best sense.

Mony AAV at 6.25, Johnny at 6.75 for as long as they are willing to sign! Johnny pays for the superbowl party and they are set.

Yes, what did people expect him to answer to that question? It would have been funny if he'd said: "To hell with the team, I'm going to get paid big time".

Well from the sounds of things he likes playing with Johnny Gaudreau, and since Gaudreau is going to Philly it is pretty obvious that Monahan is stalling while Philadelphia puts an offer sheet together.

Really no reason to believe he could, or should sign for less than market value. And I would hope the organization does not ask him to.

Do you think the owners said to Burke, "we know you are worth $xx, but if we could pay you a little less, we would have more money to spend on scouting and development".

Pay your players market value. I don't personally believe Stamkos took a discount exactly. He decided that he was happier with what TB was offering and playing for that team, than earning more somewhere else. Yzerman offered him exactly what he thought he was worth to that team. I suspect that is exactly what BT is doing.

I don't think Stamkos took a discount at all. He isn't even a point per game player. Why would you pay him anything over $8.5MM?

IMO the reason the Johnny and Mony deals are taking long (relatively speaking) to complete is because agents are pushing for bonus heavy contracts these days due to the likely lockout that will happen again. So it takes some time to hash that out vs a traditional straight salary deal.
