I think, somehow and some way, Treliving is going to pull some wizardry here and sign both guys to 7+ years while also respecting the internal Gio cap.

Another good article on what is taking so long(Flamesnation):
http://flamesnation.ca/2016/7/18/gau...-s-complicated

Quote:
Each player's representatives have an incentive to have their deal expire juuuust a bit before the other one does, as that way they would have the opportunity to get their big "Please don't go to free agency" raise before the other guy does (and effectively get the maximum piece of the Flames salary cap pie rather than negotiate against each other). That's probably something that plays into it.
Quote:
The current CBA can potentially expire at the end of the 2021-22 season and agents are understandably wary about salaries being rolled back. So, we've seen the rise of something known as "Lockout Proofing." Rather than paying out the $7.5 million equivalent to Gaudreau every season in salary (for example), the sides could negotiate a combination of salary and signing bonuses. Salary can be rolled back, but bonuses can't. So the amount paid out each season and the composition of what is paid out is a huge factor in current negotiations league-wide.

Not likely they both stay 10+ years....
FWIW at 30-33 seconds along with wanting long term he mentioned he wants to be here rest of his career.

  • EDIT: "Its a Process"
  • Deal is getting there, looking forward to get it done
  • Wants to be here for a long time, so prefers longer term contract
  • Same situation as Gaudreau, something that they talk about
  • Will see Gaudreau tonight to have a chat
  • He wants to win in Calgary
  • He is prepared to take a hometown discount
  • Wants to give us a better chance to get a Stanely Cup

Fact is, we know little of what is going on in the negotiation. I just have a feeling that is a point of contention for Gaudreau - the option to re-up sooner, and it could even be a strategy of the Flames to have the terms be 1 year apart, to avoid having to negotiate both at once again
Gaudreau has far less bargaining power since he can't sign an offer sheet. Flames could force him into a bridge deal if they want. If he gets paid top $ they need to be buying more than 2 UFA years or give him the Hamilton contract

Is this Gio thing something the Flames have spoken of?

TJ Brodie made $3.95M or something this year specifically because Gio was going to make $4.05 in the last year of his deal.

Maybe they can't get Johnny to bite on it, but it seems to be very real.

The first year of Brodie's contract had a $3.9 million salary because Giordano's contract's last year had a $4 million salary and it was felt (unclear from where) that Brodie didn't want to make more than his defense partner.

It's an allusion to Lidstrom's salary on Detroit being established as the "no higher-than-this" point, I believe. Datsyuk, nor Zetterberg were ever paid more than the captain Lidstrom in a given year.

just like Gaudreau didn't really say he wanted to play closer to home in the Morganti interview last week, Monahan didn't say he wanted to or would take a hometown discount.

The question was asked in a way that made it pretty tough to say anything but "sure!" for both guys.

So you're saying neither guy is signing here?!

Cue mass panic!

I have to disagree Bingo, the way Johnny was asked the questions he agreed but definitely side stepped and deflected. Monahan did nothing to deflect the question and I believe leaned into it and answered with some sincerity.

You don't even focus 100% of your time to your current job. Why would you need to be a hockey player in order to have that type of focus? Maybe that's why you aren't a hockey player.

Par are you seriously questioning Monahan's level of commitment?

He's shown nothing but professionalism and hard work since he became an NHLer. You have no reason to question his commitment.

I have massive respect for Johnny finishing his degree. He could take the easy route and just call it done when he first signed his NHL contract. How many of us would give up school if we just signed a NHL contract and would most likely be set for life. I would probably have a hard time staying in school.

I'm sure the Flames have a training regime for him while he's at school anyways.

I was talking about Johnny, not Monahan but I am pretty sure both guys are very committed to this team and city.

I would likely take the easy route out and say no to school, it takes a very strong and dedicated person. And Johnny is that kind of individual, massive respect to Johnny.

Johnny Gaudreau didn't make it to this level and succeed at every single level by working out.

All he needs to do is stay in shape and he will be fine. Which is all a moot point anyways since he is working out.
