Against my better judgement I ended up seeing this last night. Honestly, I am not even sure where to start. The food guy was fairly spot on. My biggest problem with the movie is how forced the humor is. It felt like every line was an attempt at a joke and for the most part they weren't funny. I didn't laugh until Chris Hemsworth showed up. He is legitimately funny in this movie. Unfortunately, he doesn't appear on screen until about 30 minutes into the film.
The Ghostbusters themselves had very few lines that I though were funny. I thought Kate McKinnon would be the bright spot of the team but I found her mostly annoying. She spent the entire movie hamming it up trying to get laughs which largely fell flat. Melissa McKarthy had a forgettable performance. Leslie Jones had a funny line or two but that was about it. I think I'd have swapped their characters making Jones the scientist and McKarthy the street wise person. Kristen Wiig's performance was decent and probably would have fit well in a movie that was, tone wise, more like the originals. I can help but feel like they were all largely forgettable.
The story itself was okay. The villain was terribly boring though and spoilers for those who care.
The CGI effects were noticeable but bearable until the big battle scene. Not only did the CGI take me out of the movie but the whole premise of a large scale action scene in Ghostbusters is weird. This isn't The Matrix, this is Ghostbusters.
Original cast cameos were fairly funny but I am still kind of burned that they appeared in a Ghostbusters movie not playing their characters. I am not a fan of how they decided to ignore the existence of the originals. I wish they had treated the movie like a sequel and had the original team pass the torch to a new crew.
Mad Max Fury Road, Creed and the Force Awakens are recent examples I would hold up as how to treat a sequel/reboot in an established franchise. Ghostbusters is an example of what not to do.
TLDR. It's a bad movie. It's maybe not Spider-Man 3, dancing bad, but it's bad.

So it did about $3.4 million in Thursday previews. Tough to tell what that means for the weekend since the range of similar preview openings goes from Warcraft ($3.1 Thurs/$24 million weekend) to San Andreas ($3.5 Thurs/$53 million weekend). Probably end up in the $40 million range, so its overall success will hinge on its legs, and I don't think it'll have any.

It was pretty good.
Even took a jab at all the sexist hate remarks it received leading up to it. Which I quite enjoyed.

Caught this tonight.
It was decent enough. I liked the special effects for the most part. I didn't think I'd end up liking the different styles of proton pack things, but I did. I thought that the cameo's were some of the highlights of the film, and liked Pott's in particular
I liked Kristen Wiig's character. Kate McKinnon really felt off to me. McCarthy and Jones were 'eh', though Jones improved notably after the "metal concert" scene, I felt.
I didn't laugh nearly as much as I thought/hoped I would, though. But that may have been my mood to begin with...but I do go to comedies to be entertained/forget about the world for a while, and this one kind of-sort of entertained me. I'd put it in the 5-6 range.

Estimates have the opening weekend box office coming in at $40-45 million, which is obviously not an outright bomb, but far, far below what Sony was banking on when they greenlit the project in hopes of a billion dollar tent pole franchise.
The mediocre domestic take as well as the movie not being released in China pretty much seals the deal that this movie will likely lose Sony $ on the project unless it has unheard of repeat business or legs at the ticket gate. Neither of those scenarios are likely and we may be headed towards a 1 and done attempt to reboot the franchise here.

Interesting thing I've noticed on Rotten Tomatoes, as people who've actually seen the movie start to vote, the fan rating has gone up. Friday morning it was 42% - now it's up to 51%
Seriously, the amount of vitriol ahead of this movie (like all the one-stars on IMDB) was annoying whether it ends up being decent or not.

I agree.
I haven't seen the movie yet but for several months there have been lots of critics - professional and amateur - who've been saying this is terrible. So much so that I think many are on a bandwagon or have other reasons to hate it.
I'll go watch it and make up my own mind. My expectations are low going in.

Here's what I thought of it. I didn't think it was as bad as some of the critics made it out to be, but it wasn't good either. It was, average. Like 5/10 average.
Here's 3 things I liked:
- Chris Hemsworth. I thought his portrayal of Kevin was hilarious. I get that some people had a problem with him being too stupid at times, but for me his dimwittedNess worked.
- the first 10 minutes. The suspense was well build at the beginning and I found it engaging. Unfortunately, it didn't keep pace with the rest of the movie
- the cameos. Some of the cameos were great. Won't say much more to avoid ruining it.
Now the 3 things I didn't like:
- the antagonist's motivation. I found it terribly thin. I also had a problem with how he became so powerful after death. Where did that come from?
- the way ghosts were disposed. I just don't understand how you can "kill" a ghost. Aren't ghosts dead to begin with? How do they die again?
- the cameos. Ok, I did like some of the cameos, but I also found them to be terribly distracting. The cameos sometimes took me out of the movie, due to the reminder of how these people once portrayed much superior characters in the previous, much superior movie.
I went in with an open mind. I didn't want to be swayed by the reviews and all the negativity attached to this movie. But even after doing so, I can say this movie is probably best watched on Netflix instead of the theaters.

All Female cast of Ghostbusters announced
I thought it was a very fun movie. Like the original, a lot of the humour lands and a lot of it doesn't. But it was an enjoying watch for me from start to finish, and that's really all that I felt it tried to be.
My biggest worry was that McCarthy's presence would be too large in this film and that she would be annoying, but she was nicely reigned in and did not overdo it.
I don't think this movie is any worse than the original. I actually enjoyed it more - but that might be a function of the expectations I had when I saw both. I didn't see the original ghostbusters until I was maybe 25. I didn't really understand all the praise it gets. Don't get me wrong - entertaining movie, but nothing more than that.
Edit: I also want to say that it makes me happy that Paul Feig is enjoying as much success as he is as a filmmaker. He has a pretty good track record. I don't think it happens very often that a show runner (in his case with Freaks and Geeks) jumps into the movie world and does as well as he has.

Decided that I'm not going to see this. Not because of the controversy or anything like that, but because the original Ghostbusters is kinda overrated IMO.

They certainly picked a good time to release it, that movie list is painful, though I do at some point want to see Secret Lives of Pets because I'm a cartoon junkie.
But the Ghostbusters coming in second to a movie in its second week isn't good news for them, considering the weak field that they have to contend with.
I can't believe how badly Independence Day has bombed though. I also didn't realize that X-Men had busted so badly.

Well even though it appears to likely this will be a financial disappointment, Sony head has basically already said there will be sequels. I would imagine though the budget for the sequels will be around $100 million all in and not $250 million all in like this one was. Movie was just too expensive and was always going to struggle to be profitable.

I quite enjoyed it. I would put it ahead of Ghostbusters 2 actually, but definitely not above the first movie. I thought some of the set pieces were fantastic. The ghosts they focused on were really awesome, especially in the first few scenes. Kevin (f-ing Kevin) was hilarious. Chris Hemsworth really has some comedic chops in him. Leslie Jones was significantly better than the trailers made her out to be. Kate McKinnon's character wasn't the best, but she did good with the role that was given to her. And honestly I thought her big action scene at the end made the payoff worth it lol.
Final act was a bit of a hot mess. The ghost army battle was over the top, but still fun. The parade balloons were kinda dumb, but were a nice callback to the cartoon. The cut-out dance scene was way too obvious with everyone lined up and doing the Stayin' Alive pose. They really should have re-shot that whole scene if there were going to cut it out.
Either way I give this a solid 7/10. In terms of summer blockbusters this year, I would put it just below Conjuring and just above X-men. Streets behind Civil War and streets ahead of BvS and ID4.
