I can't imagine the sheer terror the girl went thru before her murder. No one deserves that, least of all an innocent child. There aren't any words that can be said in the face of this tragedy to convey how heinous it was.

I'm shocked, saddened, angry and frustrated, but mostly heartbroken at the thought of what she went thru.

I was so mad watching that "man" do the perp walk, with his head hanging down - you are a real man. Hopefully he does the right thing and just owns this and can spare everyone the pain of a trial. I also hope that he has a miserable time/rough ride in prison......

The police confirmed overnight that the suspect is a family friend of the mother and child but was not known to the father.

Someone asked about the timeline in the press conference last night. I think they said the Amber Alert was sent out Monday evening. The sighting of Taliyah was on Monday morning.

It's sad to say the police probably knew the little girl was gone from the start. Heartbreaking.

the Calgary herald is reporting his other name as simmons.

I am hoping that he has to wear that jumpsuit in prision so he is easier to identifiy in a group

I just can't imagine the grief that the family is going through...just horrific. RIP little girl, no one deserves something like this, especially children. All we can hope for now is an airtight investigation to ensure this oxygen thief never sees the free world again.

According to court records, Downey was fined $250 on July 16, 1990, for possession of a stolen credit card, while a charge of obstructing a peace officer was withdrawn.

On Feb. 3, 1998, Downey was sentenced to 18 months jail for aiding and abetting prostitution. Three prostitution-related charged were withdrawn at the same time.

On Jan. 29, 2008, Downey received a total sentence of four years on a firearm and drug charges.

He pleaded guilty to a Sept. 14, 2006, charge from Medicine Hat of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, as well as two charges of trafficking cocaine in Calgary on June 28, 2006, and a Sept. 15, 2006, charge out of Calgary for possessing a firearm without being the licence holder.

The Crown also withdrew 10 other drug and firearms-related charges at the time.

Most recently a March 14, 2012, allegation that he was in possession of cocaine was withdrawn three months later.

Ugh heart breaking I have a 4 year old daughter and this just breaks my heart. How can someone do that to anyone I watch my daughter and everything is about playing, singing, dancing. She told me what she wants to do when she grows up, that poor little girl had everything taken by some piece of #### low life who should have just killed himself a long time ago and saved everybody the trouble. I also think our justice system failed her and her mom by allowing this monster back on the streets.
