I got to respect what Magiapane did the past two seasons in the OHL. He was a top scorer for two years, so that's among good company
|
Nah let's just continue to severely underrate him and instead vote for a guy who just had a terrible year in the AHL and NHL.

Took Kulak but IMO there are a lot of prospects closely grouped here.
Kulak
Poirier
Wotherspoon
Pribyl
Mangiapane
Just a lot of really solid choices at this point.

Had to go with Mangiapane. Got a good feeling about Eat Bread.

Kulak, top 4 potential and plays physical.
He might win out a spot and play top 4 this year. The 3 other dman ranked above him have more potential but he's ready and can play top 4 right now imo.

Bread man.
Also like Poirier still but am more excited about Mangiapane right now.
Mangiapane, first NHL game: 2017/2018 season, regular NHLer: 2018/2019 season

I'm more excited for eat bread because he has a very Johnny esque feel to him. Like Gaudreau crossed with Byron. Not to mention he has shown the statistical development of a top young prospect.
I'm voting Pribyl because I think he can play in the NHL this season and has a lower ceiling but a higher floor. AND hes from that special 2011 draft, picked 64 picks after Johnny by MTL.

Still like Poirier here. His disappointing season shouldn't erase his really good rookie season. He has all the tools to become an effective player in the NHL.

I see Wotherspoon as the best/most likely to make the NHL from this list. He doesn't have the highest ceiling out of the guys remaining, but his floor is well above the rest considering he's already an effective call up player.

Went Poirer, leaning to Kulak for the next round, then eat bread.

Really nice to be at round 8 and still looking at guys that while they might be a bit of a project still have some good potential!

went with Poirier. Also considered Wotherspoon and Kulak at this point, but I'm still confident that Poirier can develop into an impact player.

I went for Mangiapane this round. I have a good feeling about him!
Next for me is Pribyl. I maybe should have reversed those, because Pribyl has a very high chance of making the Flames this fall, and his NHLe is excellent, but something about Eat Bread draws me to him. Maybe it's just the nickname.
After that I'll probably go with Wotherspoon or Poirier. I'm fairly down on both of them, but hopefully they come to camp ready and surprise this year.

I went with Poirier over Mangiapane because not only was Poirier a successful junior player and 1st round pick, he has a good year in the AHL under his belt. I feel too many people are holding last year against him while giving the the benefit of the doubt to a player drafted in the 6th round, who was previously passed over in the draft, and only has his OHL resume to prop him up. Don't get me wrong, I like Magniapane, but he is much more of a long shot to play in the NHL than Poirier. The ceiling of both players is top 6 forward (probably equally low likelihood of becoming that), but Poirier has a chance to be a bottom 6 forward while Mangiapane doesn't really IMO.

I went with Pribyl as well. Called an audible at last moment. I still like the potential of quite a few of the remaining lads, but size & skill of Daniel is intriguing.
(On a geeky fantasy hockey note, I actually drafted this lad in the late rounds of a fantaasy hockey sim leagues I've been in longterm, in the late rounds of our entry draft, hoping that I'd landed a sleeper...#ftw)

His rookie season in the AHL, at 20 years old, was fantastic. That along with his speed and irritability, keep me pretty excited about this prospect.
You're wrong to assume people are voting for him due to his draft position, 3 years ago.

To me it came down to Poirier and Mangiapane.
Emile has a bit better size, and has recently worked on his two way ability.
They're both pests, tenacious, speedy and skilled.
Andrew has the better development track (up until today, this might of course change once he goes pro). Bit better scoring touch as well.
Voted Mangiapane.

Mangiapane significantly outscored Poirier in all three of their equivalent junior seasons He is smaller and of course the question is how he will translate at the pro level, but his junior stats are pretty incredible.

Mangiapane's and Poirier's three Juniour seasons are not exactly equivalent. Poirier did not turn 19-years-old until the mid-point of his last season in the QMJHL, and as a 19/20-year old was a 0.8 points/game-scoring rookie in the AHL. I would consider Mangiapane's 2014/15 season more comparable to Poirier's 2013/14 season, which means that his 2013/14 season is more closely comparable to Poirier's 2012/13 season in which he under-scored Poirier.
I would say their Juniour numbers are fairly close overall, but Poirier's excellent rookie professional season trumps all that Mangiapane has accomplished to this point.
