Do you harbour any illusion that that industry would rapidly be overwhelmed by American companies that have already weathered de-legislation and are experts at this by now?

The money isnt the good part of this, its the 'not jailing people for something minor' that is the good part. The money is just the gravy.

Do you harbour any illusions that thousands of Canadians won't be gainfully employed by the legalisation of marijuana?

Presumably, Americans know how to raise cattle, drill for oil etc, yet Alberta still makes a large amount of cash from both.

Consider cigarettes. I don't frequent America, nor do I smoke but I would imagine asking for a pack of du Mauriers in Scottsdale will be met with a blank stare.

Consider beer. Budweiser and Coors churn out billions worth of alkalized water, yet here I sit drinking an IPA from the 'Whistler Brewing Company'.

There will be an American presence in the weed market, I'm sure. I would hope that allows the United States to see the benefits of legalization - rational arguments have been made time and time again for ending marijuana prohibition.

Showing the Americans how much money they stand to make seems like the only way to get them to do anything.

Legalisation is a win for everyone.

Wasn't quite sure where to post this but figured here is as good a place as any. But if you had any doubt as to why Pharma will always be staunchly against legalizing even medical marijuana, this chart should end any doubt. These are pretty staggering numbers

Quote:
There's a body of research showing that painkiller abuse and overdose are lower in states with medical marijuana laws. These studies have generally assumed that when medical marijuana is available, pain patients are increasingly choosing pot over powerful and deadly prescription narcotics. But that's always been just an assumption.

Now a new study, released in the journal Health Affairs, validates these findings by providing clear evidence of a missing link in the causal chain running from medical marijuana to falling overdoses. Ashley and W. David Bradford, a daughter-father pair of researchers at the University of Georgia, scoured the database of all prescription drugs paid for under Medicare Part D from 2010 to 2013.

They found that, in the 17 states with a medical-marijuana law in place by 2013, prescriptions for painkillers and other classes of drugs fell sharply compared with states that did not have a medical-marijuana law. The drops were quite significant: In medical-marijuana states, the average doctor prescribed 265 fewer doses of antidepressants each year, 486 fewer doses of seizure medication, 541 fewer anti-nausea doses and 562 fewer doses of anti-anxiety medication.

But most strikingly, the typical physician in a medical-marijuana state prescribed 1,826 fewer doses of painkillers in a given year.

What are the raw numbers? Is this like a 1% drop? I can't read the article, so not sure if is in there. I hate when they give numbers without context.

If the typical physician is prescribing 182,600 doses of painkiller per year, then yes it was a 1% drop.

The graph shows that an average of 1826 fewer painkiller doses were prescribed by physicians in medical marijuana states. Then I mathed a little bit. Didn't see actual comparison percentages in the article.

They looked at the 17 states who had medical marijuana in 2013, then compared against the non-medical states, using the databases of all prescription drugs paid by Medicare Part D. And the numbers on the chart are the average fewer doses of prescription drugs given out in states with medical marijuana (or in glaucoma's case, more doses).
