85 forwards put up 50+ points last season. Not even enough to fill out 3 first line spots on 30 teams. 45 points would be a high end 2nd liner in terms of offensive production.

My guess is Laine wins the Calder although he'll get strong competition from the Toronto media.

I put way too much time into looking into this.

Among playoff teams 45 points might be low end for a 2nd line center but great for either wing.
Teams having more than 6 forwards getting over even 30 points is uncommon (10 teams)
WSH and NYR have 8 forwards over 30. Dallas has only 6, but 7-9 are all at 29 points.
Four teams (incl TOR, VAN, MTL) have only 4 forwards breaking 30

Edit - Patrick Sharp 55, Huberdeau 59, and Reilly Smith 50 were the only "2nd line" wingers I could find over 50 points
*all stats from the 2015/16 season

I'll guess the Flames finish with less than 70 points, because if Tkachuk scores enough points to overcome the bias which will be Matthews in Toronto, it likely means both Monahan and Gaudreau didn't come to terms on a deal and missed a large portion of the season.

thats quite lofty expectetions. Eichal barely cracked 50 last year. I would expect 30-40 same as bennett.

Just FYI, these two never played much together, if at all. Huberdeau is a 1st line winger and Smith is a 2nd line winger.

It will be an interesting Calder race between Matthews and Laine. My bet is Matthews because Toronto.

It will be interesting to see if Tkachuk gets more than 9 games.

Everyone always assumes the Calder is a race for the last year's draftees. But what about guys who were sent back for a year like Huberdeau. Guys who have played a fair bit both in the NHL or overseas but less than the minimum NHL games like Panarin, Stone or Malkin.

You think any of those guys have a shot beating Laine or Matthews?

Yep. Laine will need to beat Matthews by 10+ points to win the calder. Nylander too probably.
