Just because a player plays on the opposite side that they shoot from doesn't mean they are playing on their off wing. It's personal preference.

Whenever I play either hockey or soccer I like to play the left side even though I shoot from my right side. I just like the angles better for shooting especially for one timers. I'm sure some NHL players feel the same. Ovechkin is a natural left winger who just happens to shoot right.

That's actually the definition of the "off-wing." It has nothing to do with comfort or preference, it means playing on the opposite side you shoot from. Right/left, left/right.

Huh, I thought it is when you play the opposite side to your natural position you normally would play at.

E.G Gaudreau switching to RW instead of his usual spot on the left side.

I don't know what it means in other sports, but in hockey if you shoot left but play on the right side you are playing your off-wing. Same vice versa.

It's your off wing because you leave yourself more vulnerable on the boards because of your body position. The trade off is that you're better set up for the one timer position (or just general shooting position).

I may have missed this in the other threads, but noticed this little nugget on the Flames App news story: "The 18-year-old will be working with former NHLer Gary Roberts this summer, a move that he hopes will get him physically ready to push for a spot with the Flames this fall."

Love Gary's work ethic. This can only be a good thing.

This is for the people that closely watched the Flames development camp, after seeing Tkachuk, what are your opinions about Tkachuk? What do you like about his game and what do you don't like? What are the chances he makes the Flames?

Tkachuk is making the right choices to make the team this fall. Whether he makes the team or not, I think we have a winner.

I think my earlier Tkachuk hate has been a little bit mis-informed. After taking a hard look at his career so far, you can't ignore his production at every level. He's as sure a bet as anyone to be an elite winger in this league. If he's developed properly, and he has a good head on his shoulders, it will shock me if he isn't a 60+ point guy year after year. Absolutely worst case, he's a Sam Gagner (who had basically 8 straight 40+ point seasons), a Ryan Strome (who had 50 points the year before last and is still young), or a Nail Yakupov (whose development has been stunted by the colossal ineptitude up in Mulletville).

After looking at it rationally, and not emotionally, I fully believe Tkachuk is the best prospect the Flames have drafted in the least 10 years. Hopefully he develops properly and can get the most out of his massive potential.

Giving him the nine games and making a very, very, very difficult choice to send him back to junior is okay with me.

I settled on Tkachuk shortly after we lost out on the lottery and saw him falling to us in some mock drafts. I began to read about him and really felt like he would be a great fit for Bennett. I also felt like getting a winger for Bennett was more important than a RW for Johnny and Monahan. Obviously I was still more interested in landing a Fin because of the hype around them but would have been really happy with Tkachuk.

After his Memorial Cup performance it looked impossible that he would slip past the top 5. When the Nucks drafted Juolevi at number 5 my friends and I cheered as we knew Tkachuk would be a flame. Hearing everything he has said and done since the draft has been icing on the cake. This kid is a winner and he is going to force his way on the roster next year
