I don't know how a wildrose supporter could honestly be in favour of uniting the right.

The whole reason the right is split is because wildrose voters don't believe the conservative party is right wing enough.

Do they honestly think 'uniting the right' is going to put them in a position to enact wild rose policies?

How did Reform Party issues do under the Harper conservatives?

In fact, I would say wildrose supporters who are looking to unite the right are hypocrites of the highest order, willing to sacrifice their ideology for power.

Same could be said for the more progressive PC voters who are in favour of the merger, but I think the more right-wing members of the WRP have more to fear from a merger.

And some might look at it as sacrificing ideology for the greater good of the province. Alberta could use a little more of that right now.

It's not a unite the right though; to me it's more a hostile take over if you will.

Thats the best kind of takeover though. I like my right-wing politics more militant than most.

I don't think you really know what most Wildrose/Reform supporters want. Both parties came to prominence after the PC's became bloated and corrupt.

Ha.

Well I don't mean it in that sense, just more to me it comes across as there is only Wildrose conservative as conservative, so we are going to hopefully join the other conservative party and make them follow our principles.

Not saying good or bad, just that's the way it comes across to me.

And besides I don't know if you can actually merge parties in the electoral law context?

For some bizarre reason you can't in Alberta. I'm guessing the chance of the NDP allowing a change to that law is between not likely and no chance in hell.

Yup so one will have to cease to exist - and if I understand correctly any of its $ goes to elections Alberta and not the other remaining party?

So if Kenney wins is he just going to close up shop with the PCs?

But that doesn't make any sense, why not just vote PC in the first place if you're going to eschew your ideology in favour of governance?

Also of note: according to don braid, Jason Kenney is planning to stay on as an MP until October when the PC leadership race officially begins.

So he's going to campaign in alberta and do his MP duties somewhat, while still getting paid as a federal MP?

The Liberals kind of have a majority government and are going along their merry tax and spend way.

His ability to influence anything policy related at the Federal level is pretty minimal at the moment.

So more reason to quit as a federal MP then right?

Where are the 'government efficiency', 'trim the fat' Canadian Federation of Taxpayers with their outrage about Kenney collecting a federal salary while campaigning for a provincial leadership position?

No argument from me on that one. Pretty clear conflict of interest.

I don't have a grasp on what his required duties are, quite frankly. Represent his constituents, sure. But representing them, and actually getting meaningful results is another story entirely.

See the previous page with link to globe and nail story. They are, to their credit, all over this.

He should step down as a MP, its not like the Liberals are going to take his seat in a byelection, and there's not much that he can do in Parliament right now anyways.

Define "a wildrose supporter". And if you are going to tell me that supporting Wildrose = favouring the far right social conservative stance, then I suggest you re-evaluate your viewpoint.

Quote:

Sure, in general. And certainly, there are some crazies on the social conservative side. Most of the split had to do with the PCs turning into a clownshow economically. Remember, the split largely originated in Stelmach's royalty review and grew with the PC's overspending and sense of entitlement. Wildrose grew for the exact same reason as the NDP won the election: people decided it was time for a new government.

Quote:

Again, you rely on the broad brush to assume every person who voted Wildrose in the past has the same reasons to do so.

Quote:

Again, broad brush. Also, relevance?

You only say this because of a rather sad desire to demonize the right in what I can guess is most likely an effort to begin building rationalizations to make yourself feel better when/if Notley gets punted in 2019. However, by your argument, every single NDP supporter who once voted Liberal and PC is no less a hypocrite who sacrificed their ideologies for power.

Every federal voter who supported Chretien, but switched to Harper or Layton, then switched back under Trudeau is also a hypocrite. Look at all of them sacrificing their ideologies for power.

If he's fulfilling his duties as an MP, and his campaign activities are limited enough until October to allow for the same, then it's fine. If not, and he's more invested in the campaign for PC leadership such that he can't do both competently, he should simply take an unpaid leave. No need to step down.

And yes, Kenney should absolutely resign his federal seat if he wishes to run and campaign provincially.
