Technically, we just got one of Vancouvers 2nd round picks for free. Fun game!
Thats how I'm seeing this as well. But to add, he was initially a Dean Lombardi pick. Sure 4th round but Vancouver seen something in him and gave up a 2nd for him.
It's not like the Canucks went off the board at a draft to take this guy in the 2nd round. They seen something in his development that they figured was worth a 2nd rounder.
He has had a rough year, or I'm guessing his off ice family issues have existed longer than just last year.
If BT agrees that the kid deserves another chance, he clearly sees what his advisors are saying about potential upside.
And if it doesn't work out.. I'm sure he'll play well Stockton.
He garnered a second rounder because he'd been lighting up the AHL with Pearson and Toffoli and LA had too many centers to make any room for him. At the time it actually looked like VAN taking advantage of organizational depth to get a guy who looked like he could play an NHL role at a discount. He just hasn't translated, much as many guys who have AHL success can't bring it to the show.
That said, he can play NHL minutes even if he isn't going to knock anyone's socks off in doing so. The guy basically can play literally anywhere in the lineup and not be awful. He's a really good depth piece in that way. Not unlike Kyle Wellwood was for a few years. It's a no-risk acquisition.

I love this contract, as I believe it sets a precedent for the Jooris negotiations. Josh Jooris should be offered this exact same contract, take it or leave it.
This story is pretty wild...Likely an indication of why he didn't perform up to expectations.
On June 5, his father, Curtis Vey, and Angela Nicholson — a Saskatchewan couple accused of plotting to kill their spouses in 2013 — were found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder against Jim Taylor, Nicholson’s husband, and Brigitte Vey, the centre’s mother.
“It’s a tough situation,” he was saying on Tuesday. “I’m not going to sit here and say it’s the reason why I didn’t play as good as I have in the past few seasons."

What planet are these people on, where they think that both of their SO's can die, and they can be together, without the police figuring it out? For even just one of them to kill their spouse and get away with it would be amazing, but for both of them, and then for them to just ride off into the sunset? Seriously?

My guess is a lot of booze and or drugs involved in their decisions.
I like a good come back story. Hope the guy can tie it all together and put up a great season. #10 has been a bunk number since Lowry and Amonte. Redeem a great # Vey!

Ditto Locke, training camp will be filled with a bunch of unknown faces for me. This is one of the most exciting seasons I can remember. So pumped to get things going but I don't want to skip summer!

Could really see this being looked upon as the top signing by the Flames this offseason when we reflect back after next season. Gulutzan will get the most out of him.
Would make for awesome story for sure.
Super low risk, with potential for superb reward.
(The fact that he was on the Nucks last yr would make it all the more sweet).
Interestingly, 14 of his 15 pts last yr came in ~25 game segment.
Has leadership qualities ("A" in junior & AHL)
CHL Top Scorer Award 10/11
5th best Pts per Gm in AHL in 2013-14 (amongst player >= 40 GP)
