Flames hire Paul Jerrard and Dave Cameron to coaching staff
http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=888783
Quote:
The Calgary Flames announced today that Dave Cameron and Paul Jerrard will join Glen Gulutzan’s staff to work alongside existing coaches Martin Gelinas, Jamie Pringle and Jordan Sigalet. Cameron joins the Flames after spending the past six seasons with the Ottawa Senators, most recently as their head coach the last two campaigns, while Jerrard comes to Calgary after serving as an assistant coach for Vancouver’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Utica Comets.
|
Gelinas, Pringle and Sigalet stay on as assistants

It seems odd to hire a guy who was just a head coach to be an assistant. Hopefully this works out.

Does no associate being named mean that another coach will be added, or just no associate title this season?

I think no associate title.
Travis Yost @travisyost
The Flames were not the only team interested in Dave Cameron. Had an interview last week with the Canucks.

Not all that strange. Paul MacLean was hired as an assistant in Anaheim not long after being fired.

unless you are specifically referring to the timing, there are many assistant coaches across the NHL who were head coaches
some people are better suited to an assistant; more tactical or specialized than leader

Five assistant coaches? That's ridiculous. The game has become overcoached.

Too bad we did not get Travis Green from Utica. Maybe he wants to wait to be head coach

He told teams that he was not willing to become an assistant coach in the NHL.
He wants his next job to be head coach in the NHL and if you believe the reports he was close to getting the Ducks job.

As someone who has done both Head Coaching and Assisting, sometimes its nice to drop into an assistant's role after being a head coach.
Being a Head Coach can be brutal.

I kind of have four. They all have different area's that I help them out in. Works well.
Assuming they will all have different tasks. Special Teams, defense, offense, break-out, prospects, ect.

This is like saying you can have too many scouts.
There is room for on-ice evaluation in all segments of coaching and management in my opinion.
This feels like an extension of the management structure. Lots of eyeballs on the same thing can give you better information.

Kind of the way things are these days.
Not a terrible plan as each guy has their own specialization and gets to focus 100% of their time on those details. It's not like they're all on the bench during games.
It is a little perplexing what Gelinas will be doing though.
Gulutzan- head coach
Sigalet- goalies
Pringle- video
Gelinas- ?
Jerrard- ?
Cameron- ?
Safe to say one of them will be special teams and one will cover defense. I'm not sure who does what though. Maybe one takes on power play and one does penalty kill? Maybe Gelinas takes a skill development role or something similar to Adam Oates

Yeah, not like they'll be tripping over each other, they'll all have different roles.

And they won't all be on the bench at once. I don't think.
