On 2nd st and 6th ave yesterday around lunch I saw a homeless person following and yelling at what he perceived as bankers for not giving him money. I also saw in the plus 15's around 6 after work by the mall a homeless person following and belittling a woman who didn't give her money, also thinking she was a banker. I don't think it was the same person. And this was just yesterday.
Although I do see a lot that just say "thanks anyway" or "have a great day" there are still a lot of agressive ones too.

Harassing the homeless for kicks is pretty much as low as it gets.

When it comes to mental illness how do you define choice? We can't just lock everyone up in insane asylums.
And Finland is a country with no homelessness. Canada has a long way to go to be like Finland.

Some people really don't deserve what they have. Just zero humility.
This world's pretty upside down sometimes. Some pretty despicable human beings out there, and not enough karma going around to wake them up.

Jeez, what a jerk.
I also love how the Daily Mail calls him an "NHL star".

It would be a real shame if someone you know ends up on the street due to metal illness (or a number of other reasons) and you would need to empathize rather than stigmatize.
This thread is to show what a horrible human Sean Avery is, if you want to show what a horrible person you are please start your own thread.
|
To be fair, he is doing a pretty good job of that in this thread so far.

"former NHL stain" would be more appropriate.

Actually I do. You take one position that is not part of the majority and you're classified as being foolish, stupid, a moron. You have your opinions, I have mine. Stand outside Waterfront in Vancouver for 30 minutes and tell me if it's a pleasant experience.

Does it have to be said? No one is interested in disproving your point by appearing in person at some grungy location in Vancouver. Please don't play a martyr b/c you were called out for having a bigoted opinion.

It's foolish when your "position that is not part of the majority" is flat out wrong. "It is by choice they live out on the streets" my ass.
Though in Avery's defense, you gotta probably feel bad for him too because he probably also has a plethora of issues. Like seriously, what the hell is wrong with him?

False.
I do volunteer work at Inn from the Cold and I can tell you that none of these people woke up one day and decided that it would be a fun adventure to live on the streets.
There are numerous factors that occur that can cause a person to be homeless. Whether that is self induced (drugs/alcohol) or not (mental illness/domestic abuse), like Hackey said, these people still need support and guidance.
Oh and Avery is scumbag, shocker!

No you have a layman knowledge of your own experiences and biases. You have literally no idea about the topic your discussing besides your own idea of it.
No ones chooses homelessness. It's an idiotic standpoint. No one would willingly choose to be the lowest class in society, be at risk for disease and physical harm. People are on the streets primarily because of mental illness and addiction. And as someone who DOES walk by waterfront station every day, I can tell you how I've seen the same faces there year after year. The people shaking, talking to themselves, reaking of alcohol or even shooting up infront of me.
I have worked with people who have worked with the shelters in the lower east side and the conditions in many of these places is worse then living on the corner of Granville.
People do not live on the streets by choice. They live there because they've gotten to a place where they don't have a choice.
Try a little empathy the next time you take the skytrain.

There is always a choice. The sheer amount of charities available to them, and the social safety net each individual gets based on the tax we all pay. It's their choice to blow the safety net on drugs or booze and forego a home living on the streets. I don't really care the reason whether it's mental or an addiction, the programs, beds, and places are all there for them to use. Anyways, what Sean Avery did is embarrassing. That's the real reason we're commenting on this story.

There isn't a choice if they're an undiagnosed schizophrenic. There isn't a choice if they have cognitive issues which don't let them discern reality from fantasy.
The vast majority of the homeless population has some form of mental illness and your complete lack or regard, empathy, or just the need to be right about this subject is mind blowing.
