I disagree with your assessment.
How do you disagree when you factor in age? Ben Bishop is absolutely worth top money per year, but no franchise in this league would be wise to sign the reported 7 year deal he wants.

It's the years he's not worth, not the AAV.

AAV is not the problem, term is. Committing to a 7 year deal when the goalie in question is 30 years old and has a history of knee problems is a bad idea.

Not to mention they may be in a situation in 2 years that Gillies is looking like he has franchise goalie potential and he needs to play in the NHL. That Bishop contract would be a huge issue at that point.

Elliott gives them a shot to win now, he could very well be a top goalie for a few seasons here. But the key is that the flames maintain flexibility after this season/next few seasons.

Great move all-in-all.

Lavoie on the Fan still speculating/suggesting Elliot could still be the centrepiece of a trade for Bishop

Yeah, Renaud is not to be trusted on Flames news. Don't buy it at all.

Can anyone name a time something like this has happened in modern NHL history? I mean for established players, not flipping prospects and backups around like Martin Jones.

Only reason I could see it is because the Lightning might need to clear cap for this season now that Stamkos decided to re-sign there.

They have $12M in cap space but still need to re-sign Killorn ($3M), Kucherov ($7M), Namestikinov, and Nesterov.

Flipping Bishop for Elliot saves them $3.5M but I don't see why the Flames would be that interested any more. Could see the Lightning offering it though now that they may be a little desperate.

If Calgary wants Bishop, at this point, they're better off waiting for him to go UFA. I'm getting tired of seeing things work out so well for Yzerman.

I really don't like the contract expectations that was rumored out of the Bishop camp at the draft. I would rather give Elliott a chance and see how it works out.

Flames won't be trading for Bishop any longer - that AAV with term was a definite show-stopper for the Flames (and I would imagine, for most teams in the NHL).

However, if Tampa needs to shed some cap, we will help them out with Kucherov

Run with Elliott - let Pitt and TB squirm, come back around later - acquisition costs and salary don't add up for the flames right now ... or prob ever

I think the smart move would be to sign Elliot to a two year extension this off-season for around $4.5 million/yr. I don't think you want to go into another off-season with goaltending being a big question mark.

This looks like a pretty nice mask. Just like his old one but in Flames colours.

I'm really hoping we see an extension this summer, too.

I could see the Flames really putting it together this year and Elliot both helping and benefiting from that, and if that happens we could be looking at $6.5+ AAV contract requirements as a pending UFA, even considering his age, if he breaks out as an NHL star goalie.

We're all breathing a heavy sigh of relief after hearing what Ben Bishop wanted, but Elliot could conceivably be up there too, in fact we will probably have had a slightly disappointing season if he isn't looking at a huge raise next summer.

I know it's not the end of the world, but I just really believe an extension this summer vs next summer is going to be worlds apart, so if there's any way to do it this summer, do it, imo.

I strongly disagree. For one I think we need to see Elliot play for a while outside of Hitch's system that is heavily focused on defense. Most importantly however I think the Flames should keep maximum flexibility going into expansion. The Pens could become desperate at the deadline and want to flip Fleury here and toss in a 2nd or prospect to make it happen. 2 goalie teams will need to make moves and the Flames should be prepared to take advantage

When trades happen, I always wonder what the other team's fans feel. It' safe to say, we won this deal....
